So Newcastle United get back to winning ways in the Premier League with a 1-0 win over
00:04
Arsenal here at St James' Park. Alexander Isak's goal, 12 minutes into the game was
00:09
enough for all three points for Eddie Howe's side. It was a fantastic display from Newcastle,
00:14
one of their best defensive displays this season, certainly one of their best overall
00:17
performances this season. They were brilliant from start to finish. Arsenal limited a very
00:22
little attacking threat. I was a bit disappointed by Arsenal to be honest. I think for a title
00:27
chasing team you sort of expect a little bit more from them, especially creativity
00:30
and attack. They looked very limited. A big set from set-pieces, a big threat from set-pieces
00:37
even, but other than that there wasn't really anything you were too worried about. Nick
00:41
Port made very few saves. Declan Rice had a header late on, which potentially someone
00:45
else might have put in, but other than that Newcastle were fairly comfortable. But enough
00:49
about Arsenal, I think it should be about Newcastle because it was a really good display
00:52
from Newcastle. It was one that they'll take heart in, it was very much like they did against
00:57
Chelsea in midweek. They were very good against Chelsea then and they repeated their performance
01:00
today. Gordon played out on the right with Joe Linton on the left like he did on Wednesday
01:05
night and it was that sort of combination which led to the first goal. It was a brilliant
01:08
cross by Anthony Gordon, met by Isak with a fantastic header. It was just a brilliant
01:13
goal and one that Newcastle United deserved at that point. I think it's the well-Arsenal
01:18
dominated possession for a long period of the game. I think possession stats will show
01:21
that they dominated the ball, but they didn't really threaten Pope too much, and again other
01:25
than set-pieces, Newcastle did well defensively. They had a couple more of the chances to double
01:31
their lead, Arsenal had a couple of chances to get back in the game, but it was a real
01:33
resolute performance. Miguel Arteta's side were limited to very little in attack and
01:38
St James' Park, I said before the game, would a lunchtime kick-off threaten the atmosphere?
01:42
It didn't. It was bang up for a minute one. And yet, Arsenal almost, I wouldn't say wilted
01:47
under the pressure, but they certainly didn't give it best to count themselves and Newcastle
01:50
United deserved the win. Now that ends a halt of five without a win in the Premier
01:55
League, back-to-back defeats of course, and they'll go to Notting Forest next week with
01:59
Inno Spring in their step after beating Chelsea and Arsenal. So it shows that they've got
02:03
some sort of balance. I think the shout-out for Sean Longstaff, he was fantastic in that
02:06
midfield yet again. He is really proving his worth to the team. Lewis Hall was brilliant
02:13
again at left-back. It's good to see those players stepping up because Newcastle have
02:18
too often this season relied on some of their really big players, Isak Gordon, Bruno, who
02:22
have been slightly off it. But to see some of their other players stepping up is really
02:27
good to see. Bruno was brilliant today, to be fair to him. Isak took his goal fantastically.
02:31
Now that's three-and-three games for him. They won against Chelsea. The first one was
02:34
a tab-in, obviously the one on Wednesday night. It was an instinctive finish, but that one
02:37
was a proper striker's finish, a banging header from Gordon's cross. And it was fantastic
02:42
to see some of their performances right across the pitch. And I think that was well-received
02:45
by the players after the game. Sporting Sean Longstaff after the game, he said some lots
02:48
of interesting things, so stay tuned to the Shields Gazette for that across the week.
02:52
But yes, it was a fantastic performance. Newcastle United deserve a 1-0 win. I don't think they
02:57
complained too much of that. Saliba, after the game, said that his team were very disappointed
03:01
with that, with their performance. That's not really a shock. Newcastle were very good
03:04
and limited also, to little attack and threat. Now they've got eight days before the game
03:10
against Nottingham Forest, before the international break. And if they can get a win against that,
03:13
everything's looking so rosy. Once again, as I said, football can change so quickly.
03:18
When you think about a week ago, six days ago after that, Chelsea looked all flat. But two wins,
03:22
a win in the Premier League, progress in the Cup, and everything looks brighter again.
03:25
But yes, Newcastle United, 1-0 win against Arsenal.
