Transcript
00:00 Good evening, this is Monique Touzon and this is PTV News Now.
00:05 America's pastime has finally come to baseball crazy South Korea.
00:10 Major League Baseball is opening its spring training games for the 2024 season
00:14 in one of its biggest international markets with a blockbuster twin bill for today and tomorrow
00:20 pitting the formidable San Diego Padres and the game's most popular team right now, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
00:27 Featuring baseball's biggest superstar and highest paid player in professional sports,
00:31 2023 reigning American League MVP Shohei Ohtani.
00:36 But with half a day left before the opening game at 6pm in Seoul, 5am Eastern Time, 5pm Manila Time,
00:43 Seoul police acting on a tip allegedly threatening to hurt Ohtani,
00:47 scrambled to search Seoul's Gocheok Sky Dome for explosives to no avail.
00:53 South Korea's Yonhap News Agency said the threat was written in English and sent via email
00:59 allegedly by one claiming to be a Japanese lawyer to a foreign service worker
01:04 in the Consulate General of South Korea in Vancouver, Canada.
01:08 South Korean cops and stadium workers combed through the stadium earlier today
01:12 and declared the venue clear and safe.
01:15 The Dodgers played division rival Padres at 6pm today
01:19 and it is not yet known if Dodger megastar Shohei Ohtani takes to the mound or pinch hits later in the game.
01:26 Ohtani was last season's hands down American League MVP,
01:30 selected for his ability to hit for power at the plate and an excellent hurler on the mound.
01:36 A modern day and supercharged version of Babe Ruth.
01:40 The hottest company in Silicon Valley is upping the ante
01:45 against its even bigger tech rivals in chip makers AMD and Intel
01:50 which are struggling to keep pace in the race to build the most powerful AI superchips.
01:56 NVIDIA unveiled in its annual develop conference in its Santa Clara headquarters
02:01 its latest superchips in its Blackwell line of super processors.
02:05 A quantum computing service and a new suite of tools that will help run power hungry AI data centers
02:12 and help develop the ultimate science fiction dream of utility humanoid robotics.
02:18 One of the superchips unveiled in yesterday's on-site conference was the GB200
02:23 which squeezes two B200 superchips on a single board alongside the company's gray CPU.
02:30 NVIDIA says the GB200 offers 30 times the performance for servers that run chatbots like CLOD or chatGPT.
02:39 The system also promises to cut down on energy consumption by up to 25 times.
02:44 The millions of illegal immigrants who've entered the United States since US President Joe Biden took power
02:52 some 5 to 6 million estimated will be among the top three issues Americans will weigh in on before voting in November.
03:00 And even more in the Sunshine State where Republican governor and failed GOP presidential wannabe Ron DeSantis
03:07 signed three bills earlier this week to curb illegal immigration.
03:12 VOA senior Washington correspondent Carolyn Persutti tells us more.
03:17 You might say Lucy Sophie is a true mother hen protecting newborn chicks near her store.
03:26 Here in Key West harming a chicken or a rooster carries a big fine.
03:33 A French-American voted Tuesday as a US citizen for the first time.
03:37 Sophie was energized for former President Donald Trump like most other Florida Republicans.
03:42 How they feel about the country, how they feel about belonging to this country and you bring that pride to Americans.
03:50 Maybe I'm not really very excited about his slogan I will make America great.
03:56 I wish he just can say I will make Americans great.
04:00 Sophie's town of Key West Florida has a party vibe especially along Duval Street packed with raucous bars and crazy visitors.
04:11 In Key West is the southernmost point in the United States.
04:16 145 kilometers across the water here is Cuba.
04:20 Haiti just a little bit further.
04:22 So that's why immigration is such a hot political topic here.
04:26 Since October the US Coast Guard has rescued and sent back more than 100 Haitians trying to enter Key West and southern Florida.
04:34 That compares with more than 300 repatriated Cubans.
04:38 Tammy Spurlock welcomes them to a point.
04:44 I think they're absolutely vital to Key West.
04:46 They keep our city beautiful.
04:48 They're what keeps us going.
04:50 Do I think that everybody needs to come in legally? Absolutely.
04:53 But they are vital.
04:55 Donald Trump who promises mass deportations if he's reelected voted Tuesday near his home in Palm Beach Florida.
05:02 They have to close the borders. Our country is dying.
05:05 Our country is being overridden. This is an invasion.
05:09 President Joe Biden was not on the Florida ballot Tuesday.
05:13 Instead he was campaigning in the southwest where he criticized Trump.
05:17 Now he says immigrants are poisoning the blood of our country.
05:21 What the hell is he talking about?
05:23 And some of those immigrants, specifically Haitians, are fleeing violence at home.
05:28 But this first-time voter isn't making exceptions.
05:31 I understand that that's an issue but it's still not an excuse to illegally break the law.
05:40 Still at least one immigrant a day leaves home and braves the dangerous Florida straits in search of better days ahead.
05:51 Carolyn Persuti, VOA News, Key West, Florida.
05:55 And at this juncture we turn to our colleague in PTV's Pine City Studios for the latest development brewing in the Fort Hellieras.
06:05 Eddie Carta.
06:07 Good evening, Philippines.
06:09 We are still in the midst of the forest fire incident.
06:12 We are still in the midst of the cloud ceiling operation conducted by the Air Force Weather Group, also known as the Villamor Air Base.

06:28 He is the deputy group commander.
06:30 He helped in the operation that resulted in the destruction of the fort.
06:34 The Air Force Weather Group, also known as the Office of Civil Defense and Bureau of Fire Protection,
06:40 conducted the operation TLC-210 Fixed Wing with a Cessna rain-making aircraft.
06:47 The cloud ceiling was also conducted by the PAPT.
06:52 It was also intentionally and intentionally constructed to prevent the cloud from falling.
06:56 Thank you, Toguan, to the Philippine Air Force, RDRNMC, Air Component, Disaster Response Operations, and to Cordillera, Region 1.
07:06 The good thing is that the BFP, the personnel of BFP are in the area.
07:12 They will be the ones to feed us.
07:14 So, there is coordination with BFP, OCD, and the Air Force.
07:19 Once we confirm that there will be suitable clouds, our aircraft will take off for cloud ceiling operation.
07:28 In the next episode, we will continue our conversation with Lib Song,
07:34 who was involved in the destruction of the Jaya Abra Fort in the Panawan of Panagtutudo.
07:38 We will also discuss the effects of the armed conflicts.
07:45 The road project of the National Task Force to End Local Armed Conflict, or NTF-LCAC,
07:52 was not completed.
07:53 The road was not built.
07:56 The local access road was not built.
07:59 The road was not built and the transportation was not done.
08:02 The funds that were allocated to the project were not spent.
08:08 The funding for the upgrading of the local access road was not spent.
08:15 Lib Song helped in the support of the Barangay Development Program, SBDP Fund, for 2022.
08:22 The NTF-LCAC project was not completed.
08:25 SBDP's project was not completed.
08:27 We are sure that this implementation will be completed for the community.
08:35 This is Edicarta, reporting for PTV.
