I'm Abbey McClure, I'm the lifestyle specialist for the Yorkshire Evening Post and we're going
00:07
to take a whistle-stop tour of some of the best new openings that you've got to try in
00:11
2024. So if last year was anything to go by, we're going to see some huge growth in the
00:17
Leeds food and drink scene this year. And I'm at Tamatanga on the hedgerow, one of the
00:21
new openings we've welcomed.
00:24
We've got sites in Birmingham, Nottingham and Leicester. We opened the first one in
00:28
2008 I believe, so it's been on the run for quite a while now. We decided to move to Leeds
00:33
because of the already diverse food culture here, diverse population and the friendly
00:38
locals as well.
00:39
When I started my career in Tamatanga first, I used to work as a tandoor chef, as a curry
00:45
chef. I learned everything, then they just checked my skills and everything, ability
00:50
to work, and they promoted me in the Leeds as a head chef. And I'm very excited to be
00:55
a head chef. It's all about my team.
00:57
And there are new teams in new kitchens right across Leeds, who are excited to serve Leeds
01:03
locals and visitors alike this year and beyond. In Leeds city centre, some of our newest arrivals
01:10
include Three's a Crowd on North Street, Mahe Coastal Indian in the Merrion Centre, and
01:17
just along from that, Blue Pavilion, a £3 million venue that celebrates East Asian cuisine.
01:25
Other relative newcomers to the Leeds foodie scene include Jamrock, which has reopened
01:30
in Kirkgate, Farmhouse and Flatiron, both on Lans Lane, Pizza Pilgrims on Boar Lane
01:37
and South Parade's Olive Tree Brasserie.
01:41
Wendy's certainly caused a stir when it returned to Brigitte last September, and the Yorkshire
01:47
Evening Post's Chef of the Year, Craig Rogan, launched his new fine dining experience at
01:52
the Collective on Boar Lane.
01:55
Some of my highlights outside of Leeds city centre and into the suburbs include Bricklebank's
02:00
Cafe and Bar in Chappawallaton, Hammer Korean, which launched in Oakwood, Out, which relocated
02:07
to Burley Road, Tadda in Headingley, and the South Indian restaurant Trissapooram on Kirkstall
02:14
Road.
02:15
I'm loving it. I'm not from Leeds myself, so I kind of get to experience this first
02:18
hand as well as other people that are not from the city or they are from the city, but
02:23
it's very diverse food culture and population wise as well. There's a bit of everything.
02:28
Obviously we're like an authentic Indian. All chefs from all over India are here. Food
02:32
scene as a whole as well. It's just so broad, like you can find everything here and maybe
02:38
a couple of years ago, maybe you couldn't, but now there's something for everyone. So
02:41
even if something isn't your taste, I'm sure you'll find something that is.
02:47
So hopefully that gives you a taste of some of the exciting new openings Leeds has welcomed
02:51
recently. It's a northern city that is really putting food on the map and it's an exciting
02:57
place and a tasty place to be.
