00:03 It's an interesting time around the NFL, not just injuries and news and notes and
00:07 breakdowns of playoff games, but 14 teams now into the postseason.
00:12 That means the 18 others in the NFL are already looking forward to 2024.
00:18 And what a wild week it has been in the coaching carousel around the National
00:22 Football League.
00:23 Of course, it was expected, but it was still surprising.
00:26 Yesterday morning, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots announcing
00:31 a mutual porting of ways after 24 years together.
00:35 So who would be the successor in Foxborough?
00:38 That has been named as of this Friday morning.
00:42 Gerard Mayo is the new head coach of the New England Patriots.
00:45 He played for the Pats from 2008 to 2015.
00:49 He won a Super Bowl with the Patriots.
00:52 He was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year back in 2008, a two-time Pro Bowler
00:57 who played and worked under Bill Belichick.
01:00 He has been a linebackers coach for New England since 2019.
01:03 Now he gets his shot as the head man in Foxborough.
01:06 >> Yeah, and rightfully so.
01:09 If anyone is following along with the Patriots franchise over the past couple
01:12 years, you knew this was going to happen.
01:14 Well, Bill Belichick was hanging it up.
01:15 Gerard Mayo was gonna be that next guy.
01:17 It was one of those decisions where Robert Kraft made.
01:19 It's like, you know what?
01:20 I'm gonna pay him more money and make sure that he understands when Bill Belichick
01:24 hangs it up, which probably is gonna be sooner than later due to his age,
01:27 you will be the front man.
01:29 And he finally gets his chance here as we all anticipated, and rightfully so.
01:33 And if you're going to trust Robert Kraft's intuition on head coaches, yeah,
01:36 he made that trade decades ago here just to bring in Bill Belichick from the New York
01:41 Jets, and look how that worked out.
01:42 So a judge of character, Robert Kraft?
01:44 Absolutely.
01:45 Think of the players that have come through New England, have glowing responses here.
01:49 Not like, I was underhanded a little bit.
01:50 Robert Kraft has always been the forefront of one of those teams that you would like.
01:54 An owner that goes, you know what?
01:55 I'm gonna give you the chance to win, and I'll back you up.
01:58 And how many times did Bill Belichick go through those cheating scandals,
02:01 got banged for $500,000, a million dollar fine?
02:05 And he goes, you know what?
02:06 Don't worry, next contract, I'll give you that extra million to cover it up.
02:08 He always has A, his players back, and also his coaches back.
02:12 Gerard Mayo's in a perfect spot here for him to succeed.
02:15 But I stress this again, don't you dare grade this guy for two years here.
02:19 You're talking about a regime change, something we haven't seen for
02:22 close to 25 years, and the least amount of talent that we've seen with the Patriots
02:27 in 25 years.
02:28 This might take a year or two just to turn those gears,
02:31 because also remind you of this.
02:33 Bill Belichick, rightfully so, was a great head coach.
02:35 He also came through the AFC East when no other organization could even get their
02:39 foot in the door on knowing what they were doing.
02:41 Firing coaches, horrendous salary cap management here.
02:44 Now he's looking at who?
02:45 The Miami Dolphins going in the right direction.
02:47 The Buffalo Bill is the same thing, and Aaron Rodgers coming back to the Jets.
02:51 So if he wins six games next year, oh man, what a bust.
02:54 No, your head coach Bill Belichick didn't even win six games last year.
02:58 Give him some time, people, it'll work.
03:00 >> A four-win season for Bill Belichick to end out his 24-year tenure
03:06 in New England.
03:07 That was the least amount of wins for a Bill Belichick-led NFL team in any of his
03:12 29 years as a head coach, the 24 in Foxborough, the five previous in Cleveland.
03:19 Gerard Mayo has been there.
03:20 He knows the Patriots way, but it's time now for
03:23 an upgrade to how the Patriots run this organization.
03:27 And good for the Kraft family to name this head coach right away.
03:30 The succession plan was given to the NFL League office many years ago.
03:35 It's why the hiring process could be expedited for the Patriots.
03:39 But it's not just a head coach to replace Bill Belichick.
03:43 You also need a general manager, a decision maker in the front office now,
03:47 who will be tasked with reinventing a roster that, as Donnie mentioned,
03:50 was poorly managed by Bill Belichick the last three to four years after Tom Brady
03:55 left New England to join Tampa Bay in 2020.
