Good morning, welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines!
00:30
Good morning!
00:32
Atty. Melvin, can you explain to us
00:35
what is the purpose of Kiwanis
00:38
and how does it help the local community?
00:42
I'll start with how Kiwanis all started.
00:46
We are an international volunteer organization.
00:51
We were organized in 1915.
00:54
1915?
00:55
1915, that means we are 108 years old by now.
00:58
And maybe, those 108 years,
01:02
we have done a lot.
01:04
We won't last for 108 years
01:06
if our projects don't succeed.
01:09
And Kiwanis is always centered on the benefit of children.
01:13
Okay.
01:14
That is our motto, serving the children of the world.
01:17
Our mission, vision,
01:20
as an international organization,
01:23
we look forward to developing the community,
01:26
the children, one child at a time,
01:29
so that they can be well-off.
01:32
Okay, so what could be some of the greatest accomplishments
01:35
in terms of helping the kids of your organization?
01:38
We have a wide variety of services that we give.
01:41
Okay.
01:42
Health, education, sports,
01:44
just like what we are going to talk about now.
01:46
We're going to talk about the Kiwanis Special Games.
01:49
Most of that is in the health,
01:51
because we see that it really needs to be...
01:54
A major problem, concern.
01:55
Especially in far-flung areas.
01:58
We see a lot of kids in the province
02:02
who don't have slippers.
02:05
So at least, give them slippers.
02:07
The kids will be happy,
02:09
especially if they're looking for thick soles.
02:11
Yes.
02:12
They really like that because they'll be playing for a long time.
02:15
They sometimes play with the straw.
02:17
Yes, they have a long-legged prisoner.
02:19
Sir Armand, on the occasion of your 108th anniversary,
02:24
what are the activities that our countrymen can look forward to
02:27
in your Kiwanis Week?
02:29
Okay, we have a week-long celebration
02:32
that will start on January 20.
02:35
This is the celebration of the Kiwanis Special Games
02:41
on Saturday at Marikina Sports Center.
02:45
Oh, that's near.
02:47
And of course, it starts on Saturday.
02:50
And then the next day, Sunday,
02:52
we have a wreath laying that we'll do in Luneta.
02:56
The ball will be carried by other Kiwanis clubs in Luzon.
03:03
And then, on Wednesday,
03:07
we have tennis and badminton doubles
03:13
that we'll do in the Philippine Columbian.
03:15
Okay, that's the 38th Kiwanis Special Games.
03:18
Yes.
03:19
And on Friday, which is January 26,
03:23
we have bowling that we'll do in Imus Robinson.
03:28
And lastly, this is our celebration,
03:32
the Kiwanis Night,
03:34
that we'll do in Manila Hotel.
03:36
It starts at 6 o'clock.
03:38
Okay, okay.
03:39
There are a lot of activities, right?
03:41
Yes.
03:42
I think what Armand is saying here is that
03:47
when Kiwanis was organized in January 21, 1915,
03:52
okay, so every year we celebrate Kiwanis Week
03:56
starting January 21.
03:58
President Ferdinand Ramos knew about it
04:01
and he had a presidential proclamation to that effect.
04:04
Ferdinand Marcos.
04:05
I'm sorry, Fidel Ramos.
04:07
FDR.
04:08
FDR.
04:09
The late FDR.
04:10
I'm confused.
04:11
Sorry for that.
04:12
And what kicks off Kiwanis Week celebrations
04:15
is the special games.
04:17
That's the beginning.
04:19
And then followed by many activities, projects,
04:22
sports activities that culminates in what we call the Kiwanis Night.
04:26
Okay.
04:27
Sir Nato, I'm interested in this because it's close to us.
04:30
I'm a farmer.
04:31
Yes.
04:32
In Marikina, you'll do a sports complex.
04:34
Correct.
04:35
Can you tell us more about the details?
04:37
Well, every year, this is the 38th,
04:40
so we've been doing this for the last 37 years.
04:43
There are many activities for special kids.
04:45
Then we have a lot of schools participating.
04:48
There are different games.
04:50
There's running, no swimming,
04:53
running, there are relay games,
04:57
just to have the kids really enjoy the games.
05:03
You know, here at Kiwanis Special Games,
05:06
everybody receives a medal.
05:08
It's not exactly very competitive,
05:11
but the idea is for recognition of kids with special needs.
05:16
Like me, I have a 23-year-old special needs child,
05:20
so this is very important to us parents and even the teachers.
05:24
The teachers and coaches are there.
05:26
So it's really very fun, and every year we have it,
05:30
and we've been doing this for the last 37 years.
05:32
This is the 38th.
05:33
We should join, right?
05:35
You're still a kid, so you can join.
05:38
So, Ma'am Cecil, we want to know, of course,
05:40
how has the reception been for your activities for the last 38 years?
05:45
What are the public saying, the parents?
05:48
Are they really looking forward to every year of this activity?
05:51
Tell us more.
05:52
Yes, actually, I joined Kiwanis in 2020.
05:56
That was my first special games.
05:59
You know what I've learned?
06:01
People really look forward to this event, especially the children.
06:06
It's a half-day inclusive event of different games
06:11
that qualify them to their developmental conditions.
06:15
So we aim here to inform the public
06:19
and for the public to embrace the uniqueness of these children.
06:25
Actually, we want to differ from saying that they're special children
06:30
because they have their natural, their whole as human beings.
06:35
So it's up to us to really embrace them
06:38
and welcome them in our community.
06:40
So with this special games,
06:42
we give the children a chance to enjoy, celebrate, have fun,
06:48
gain experience by having the right attention,
06:51
and for them to showcase also their talents
06:54
because there's also a portion here
06:56
that children have intermission numbers.
07:00
They dance, they do poems, and they also sing.
07:04
So it's really a very heartwarming event
07:09
where we experience the joy of these wonderful kids.
07:13
I think this is a message for our fellow Filipinos
07:16
that even if there are games or days to get to know them,
07:20
we should treat them as if they don't have special needs.
07:25
They're normal people.
07:27
If we see them in the mall, they're working,
07:29
it's really inspiring.
07:31
On the other hand, they should be normal Filipinos.
07:33
It's a social integration that's happening.
07:35
Well, Atty. Melvin, your activities are very important for our youth.
07:41
But for those who are interested in joining us,
07:45
how can they get additional information?
07:48
Well, first, we have in our flyers.
07:51
For more information, you can call our Kiwanis Week Chairman,
07:55
Past District Governor Uthman Mamadra.
07:58
His number is 0917-879-7727.
08:04
And of course, the guy beside me, Past Lieutenant Governor Armand Busmente
08:09
at 0917-105-8197.
08:15
I think you also have your social media accounts as well.
08:18
Yes, we also have our Facebook account.
08:20
There, Kiwanis.
08:22
Yes, Kiwanis Special Games.
08:24
All right. This is a great opportunity for all of us to unite and support the organization Kiwanis.
08:33
Thank you for giving us information and details about your activities.
08:38
For you, 38th Kiwanis Special Games, we have Atty. Melvin Mendoza,
08:42
we have also Mr. Armand Busmente, Mr. Nat Agbayani, and Ms. Cecil Maramba.
08:48
Thank you so much, Madam President.
08:50
Thank you very much, too.
08:51
We look forward to coming here again to promote our activities.
