00:10 and today we're taking a look at tough unlockable costumes,

00:13 weaponry, and armor across the God of War series.

00:32 The Blazing Magma armor set.

00:45 In the 2018 game,

00:47 there are two optional realms that offer tougher challenges,

00:50 Niflheim and Muspelheim.

00:52 While completing both gets you great armor sets,

00:54 the fiery Muspelheim is the harder of the two.

00:57 Made up of combat challenges,

00:59 you'll be able to craft and buy the Magma armor set from materials you only find here.

01:04 Doing so only takes a few fights,

01:06 but if you want to take full advantage of what it can offer,

01:10 you'll need to put in quite a bit of effort.

01:22 Upgrading the armor set requires going through many increasingly tougher trials.

01:27 Including a fight against Gondol,

01:29 who while not on the level of Sigrun,

01:31 is one of the hardest Valkyries in the game.

01:44 Mime of War.

01:45 God of War, Chains of Olympus.

01:55 There are a lot of unlockables in God of War that you can

01:58 only get by beating an entry on the highest difficulty.

02:01 For Chains of Olympus,

02:02 you get the Mime of War costume.

02:05 It isn't as simple as just starting the game on God mode as it's called.

02:09 The difficulty level is only unlocked after beating the game once.

02:12 Not only do enemies naturally hit harder,

02:15 but orbs are only worth half as much.

02:18 [MUSIC]

02:26 The Mime of War is definitely a good reward.

02:29 In contrast to God mode,

02:31 wearing it multiplies the worth of red orbs by four,

02:34 and green and blue orbs by two.

02:37 That's on top of the silly appearance and invisible weapons.

02:50 The Zeus armor set.

02:51 God of War Ragnarok.

02:53 [MUSIC]

03:01 Ragnarok has a lot of beneficial armor sets,

03:04 though one of its best can only be unlocked on a new game plus file.

03:08 A second playthrough isn't too big of an ask,

03:11 considering how passionate the fan base is,

03:13 and that the option was added post-launch.

03:15 However, where you unlock it will still pose a challenge.

03:19 You can't begin collecting the pieces until you've beaten the main storyline.

03:23 Afterwards, you'll need to clear the post-game remnants of Asgard quests.

03:34 You'll get one piece after clearing your fourth remnant,

03:37 another after your sixth,

03:39 and the final piece for defeating the Valkyrie Queen Ganon.

03:43 Even if you did face her on a regular playthrough,

03:46 this is far from an easy fight.

03:55 The Gravedigger's Shovel.

03:57 God of War, Ghost of Sparta.

04:07 Ghost of Sparta played things a bit differently with how players unlocked content.

04:11 It included a new area called the Temple of Zeus,

04:14 where Kratos could spend red orbs,

04:16 collected either in the campaign or through challenge modes.

04:19 The highest costing reward was the Roboto's Costume at 250,000 orbs.

04:25 But in total, you'd have to spend a million red orbs to unlock everything,

04:30 and therefore gain the temple's hidden prize.

04:40 While you get these orbs just by playing,

04:42 that's still a lot of work.

04:44 But by doing so,

04:45 you'll be led to a secret area with the Gravedigger's Shovel,

04:49 which unlocks the ability to play as Zeus in the game's combat challenges.

05:01 Mik Kratos, God of War, Chains of Olympus.

05:14 It's a shame the newer God of War games don't have the silly costumes of the Greek era.

05:19 In Chains of Olympus,

05:20 the Mik Kratos costume made the Ghost of Sparta resemble a Scotsman,

05:24 complete with bright red hair,

05:26 a kilt, and gigantic axes in place of his blades of chaos.

05:33 Wearing it drastically increases Kratos' damage output,

05:37 while halving the amount of blue and green orbs you can collect.

05:40 The costume is unlocked by beating the Challenge of Hades,

05:44 a series of five combat encounters.

05:46 It isn't as arduous as some other optional challenges in the series,

05:51 but a few of them are still a pain,

05:53 especially one that has Kratos constantly losing health while enemies come at him.

06:04 The Spartan Armor Set, God of War Ragnarok, Valhalla.

06:09 [MUSIC]

06:17 Sony surprised everyone with an unveiled free DLC for

06:21 God of War Ragnarok at the 2023 Game Awards.

06:24 As of writing, Valhalla is still brand new,

06:27 but it is without a doubt one of the more difficult areas in the game.

06:32 Bringing new story elements as well as roguelike mechanics,

06:35 it's hard to say how difficult a time you'll have when so many things are randomized.

06:40 However, you'll have no companion,

06:42 and you'll only unlock cosmetic armor as you go.

06:46 Kratos enters with only his weapons and skills.

06:48 [MUSIC]

06:57 Additionally, considering there are a ton of bosses inside,

07:00 you'll definitely be tested.

07:02 While there are additional challenges,

07:04 beating it once gains you the Spartan Armor Set,

07:07 and the ability to make Kratos look like his Greek era self.

07:11 Athena and Hercules costumes, God of War II.

07:25 God Mode is called Titan Mode in God of War II,

07:28 but no matter what it's called,

07:30 the very hard difficulty remains an insurmountable challenge for many players.

07:34 In addition to beating the game once to unlock it,

07:37 Titan Mode increases all enemy strength while decreasing yours.

07:40 Green and blue orbs aren't quite as potent,

07:43 while red orbs are much rarer.

07:46 Beating Titan Mode gets you two costumes for the price of one,

07:49 Hercules and Athena.

07:51 [MUSIC]

07:58 The Hercules costume doubles your power while halving your defense,

08:01 and the Athena costume increases the value of red,

08:04 green, and blue orbs while also giving a decrease to defense.

08:15 The Hilt of Skafnung, God of War Ragnarok.

08:20 Technically speaking, Kratos gets this hilt upon

08:29 starting the Fit for a King quest in Ragnarok,

08:32 but actually being able to use it, that's the tricky part.

08:36 Players must hunt down and defeat all 12 Berserkers,

08:39 a couple of which don't fight alone.

08:42 Not only are they naturally scattered throughout the realms,

08:45 but they're on par with the Valkyries from the 2018 game,

08:49 which is to say, they're going to beat the crap out of you.

08:59 The final bout against King Hrolf is obviously the toughest.

09:03 If you don't have your weapons and armor fully upgraded,

09:06 he'll make you regret it.

09:07 Thankfully, the hilt is worth it once you can actually use it.

09:11 It summons a group of ghostly swords that

09:14 make every enemy encounter a breeze.

09:23 Radiant Shield of Unity and Aspis of Spartan Fury, God of War.

09:29 Every God of War game is hard if you play on the highest difficulty.

09:38 With less opportunities to heal than the original games,

09:41 the Norse ones may just have the edge.

09:43 But that's far from the only issue.

09:45 For the 2018 installments,

09:47 give me God of War difficulty,

09:49 enemies are not only stronger, quicker, and more durable,

09:52 but their status effects also deal more damage and last longer.

10:03 Beating the game this way will surely satisfy you,

10:05 but it also comes with a couple of rewards.

10:08 These are two shields for Kratos,

10:10 the Radiant Shield of Unity and the Aspis of Spartan Fury.

10:14 Sadly though, these are purely

10:16 cosmetic skins for the shield he already has.

10:25 Challenge of the Gods costumes, God of War 2005.

10:30 [MUSIC]

10:36 The original God of War had

10:37 multiple silly but rewarding costumes to unlock.

10:41 However, it took beating a series of fights that are

10:43 some of the hardest the series has ever seen.

10:46 The Challenge of the Gods is unlocked after beating the game,

10:49 and tasks you with completing 10 encounters.

10:52 Many of them come with time limits,

10:54 which only adds stress to the already daunting criteria.

10:58 Most of them throw groups of extremely powerful enemies at you,

11:01 and the final one is a recipe for fury.

11:04 [MUSIC]

11:12 Kratos must raise a platform by defeating

11:14 Satyrs and Cerberus pups who endlessly spawn,

11:17 and take up quite a bit of room on the minuscule platform.

11:21 If you have the patience,

11:23 this unlocks Chef of War,

11:25 Ares Armor, Bubbles, Tycoonius, and Dairy Bastard.
