Record-breaking warmth in December

Several US cities are on pace to have their warmest December ever.

00:02 Taking a look at the next three days in Las Vegas,

00:07 and by the way, not for nothing,

00:09 the last three days of December

00:11 and the last three days of 2023,

00:14 you know, the forecast doesn't look all too shabby,

00:16 at least in my humble opinion.

00:18 Saturday and Sunday, yes, more cloud cover than Friday,

00:20 a perfect sunny day, 61 degrees,

00:23 and even 59 with the cloud cover over the weekend.

00:26 But here's the thing about Las Vegas,

00:28 these next three days, all three days,

00:30 even with those clouds creeping in,

00:32 are above the historical average high

00:33 for this time of year, which is 56 degrees.

00:35 That's not blowing anything out of the water,

00:37 it's not like it's a 10 degree difference,

00:39 but it's something to think about.

00:41 On that note, let's think about Minneapolis,

00:43 where temperatures should be in the mid-20s.

00:46 The historical average high for this time of year

00:48 is 26 degrees.

00:50 Minneapolis, though, is going to be 40 on Friday,

00:53 and hey, I'm not saying that's tropical,

00:55 but the weather is very much a relative subject.

00:58 It's way above the historical average,

00:59 and therefore I'd consider it a tad warm,

01:01 or let's just call it mild for this time of year.

01:04 Saturday and Sunday, more of the same

01:05 with temperatures in the low 30s.

01:06 Even on Sunday, with a couple of snowflakes

01:09 in the forecast across Minneapolis,

01:10 we're still above the historical average high,

01:12 and I'm just gonna do you one better.

01:14 We're going to Fargo this time,

01:15 where it's the same story, 20 degrees.

01:18 That's where we should be this time of year

01:20 for your high temperatures in Fargo,

01:21 but we are looking at temperatures

01:23 not even getting to 20 over the next three days.

01:25 Even the coldest day on Sunday, 22 degrees.

01:28 Again, I'm not saying that's warm,

01:30 but it is technically above the historical average.

01:32 You might be sitting here saying,

01:33 "Christina, what are you talking about?

01:35 "Why are you so intent to talk about

01:37 "these next three days of high temperatures?"

01:39 Well, these last three days of December

01:40 are very important for the three cities I just named,

01:43 because all three of them are actually looking

01:46 at the warmest December on record.

01:48 We are on pace to see that in Fargo,

01:51 in Minneapolis, in Las Vegas,

01:52 and I want to mention also in International Falls

01:55 and in Milwaukee.

01:56 It's the cumulative effect of all of those days this month,

02:00 where temperatures have been far above,

02:02 or at least somewhat above, the historical average.

02:05 Fargo really leading the charge here.

02:07 Overall, 15.6 degrees.

02:10 That's the departure from the historical average temperature

02:12 in the month of December.
