Weekend to bring severe weather, flooding risk to Southeast

It will be a stormy weekend across the southeastern United States as a surge of tropical moisture fuels heavy rain and severe thunderstorms.

00:02 you might be saying, huh?

00:04 This doesn't seem all that bad.

00:06 I mean clouds in Orlando and Tampa.

00:08 Quick shower in Jacksonville,

00:09 sunshine in Tallahassee temperatures

00:11 in the 60s and 70s.

00:12 But the problem with the forecast

00:14 in Florida today is right here.

00:16 Winds, winds, winds, winds, winds,

00:18 your speeds.

00:19 Remember speeds are the one minute

00:21 averages in the teens and 20s.

00:23 Daytona Beach 23 mile per hour wind

00:25 speed clocking in most recently.

00:26 We've got 17 on the board for West

00:29 Palm and 18 in Miami and I'll tell

00:31 you this much.

00:32 Gusts are already up in the 30s and 40s today,

00:35 but that's only half of the wind

00:36 problem on this Friday here.

00:38 The other half is that these strong winds.

00:40 This Northeast wind is very persistent,

00:42 so much so in fact that we actually

00:44 saw some of the water being pushed

00:46 out of Tampa Bay yesterday.

00:48 That's a phenomenon that we

00:49 generally see with tropical cyclones.

00:51 I'm talking hurricanes,

00:52 tropical storms,

00:52 once in awhile,

00:53 tropical depression.

00:54 So I think that's put some perspective.

00:56 Just how strong and again how

00:58 persistent the winds really are.

00:59 Now the other problem with that is up

01:01 and down the East Coast of Florida

01:03 through Georgia in the Carolinas.

01:04 You can see we've highlighted the area in red.

01:07 That's where we're concerned about the

01:09 effects of let's say rip currents.

01:10 For example, really rough surf.

01:12 We've seen some nasty white caps

01:13 out on some of our Florida beaches,

01:15 and even as you're getting out,

01:16 let's say to the North Carolina coast,

01:18 which is very fragile once you

01:20 get toward the Outer Banks.

01:21 That's where we could see some coastal erosion.

01:23 Please be careful as we move through today,

01:25 and no,

01:26 it's not a good day to be out on the water,

01:28 but remember that my friends that was

01:29 the appetizer before a five course dinner.

01:31 Now we have a storm moving in from the

01:33 plains this storm right here.

01:35 We've been tracking this for a couple of days.

01:37 This is going to come through the Gulf,

01:39 pick up a ton of Gulf moisture and

01:41 basically just drop it all on Florida.

01:42 So not only is today a bad day,

01:44 but honestly,

01:45 this weekend kind of stinks too.

01:46 In Florida,

01:47 I'm sorry to say I don't want

01:48 to be the bearer of bad news,

01:50 but Mother Nature is doing

01:51 what she's going to do here.

01:52 You'll notice 4 to 8 inches as we

01:54 look at the rain amounts from

01:55 Apalachicola back to Jacksonville.

01:57 We're looking down toward,

01:58 let's say Orlando down to Cocoa Beach,

01:59 Melbourne, Tampa, Miami.

02:00 I could just name a bunch of

02:02 your peninsula cities here,

02:03 but you get the picture.

02:04 This lighter green representing where

02:06 we have two to four inches of rain.

02:08 But wait, there's more rain and

02:09 flash flooding Saturday and Sunday.

02:11 That's just part of the equation

02:12 on Saturday afternoon and Saturday night.

02:14 We're also looking as this storm

02:16 moves through the sunshine state

02:17 for that severe weather potential.

02:19 We have two levels of risk.

02:21 The first here in yellow.

02:22 That's your some risk for spotty,

02:24 severe storms.

02:24 The second in orange,

02:26 is your moderate risk where more

02:27 numerous storms are possible.

02:29 Now we're looking at almost everything here.

02:31 This is a very saturated system,

02:32 so again,

02:33 flash flooding is a big concern,

02:35 but we could also see damaging

02:37 gusty winds and even some isolated

02:39 tornadoes not out of the question.

02:40 I'm sorry to say I don't want

02:42 to ruin your weekend plans here.

02:44 I don't want to be doing that,

02:46 but this just kind of is what it is,

02:48 and we want to prepare you ahead of time,

02:51 especially in terms of that severe weather.

02:54 weather app. You can get those

02:56 watches and warnings right to the

02:57 palm of your hand. Just turn the

02:59 push notifications on for your location.

03:01 Weekend summary here from Jacksonville

03:02 to Tallahassee, Orlando, Tampa,

03:03 Miami. Not nice rain, thunderstorms.

03:04 Temperatures are fine.

03:05 60s and 70s.

03:06 That's not anything to write home about,

03:08 but it's the rest of the forecast.

03:10 It's bothersome now.

03:10 Thankfully,

03:11 after this storm leaves,

03:12 we do get a nice break here.

03:14 You can see Monday and Tuesday in Orlando.

03:16 We're right back to sunshine and we

03:18 eventually warm up after a quick burst

03:20 of the 50s back to the 60s and 70s.
