In San Vicente, Palawan, a 6-year-old boy was accidentally stabbed.
00:06
Due to their age, they did not know if this was a fatal wound.
00:12
But a few months later, a leg of the child had to be cut.
00:17
His parents are now thinking of the cause of this child's death.
00:22
This is what our cabrigada's Jonathan Andar has learned.
00:28
According to residents of Barangay Karuray in San Vicente, Palawan,
00:32
there is a monster in their area that is causing their suffering.
00:37
We don't see these animals easily because, like us, it's a dark and remote area.
00:44
In Mayron, there are really monsters here, especially in Cabacawan,
00:48
like what they say, it's a ghost town.
00:50
That's where it really comes out.
00:52
The most feared monster is said to be lurking in the dark.
00:58
And the last one he found was the child of Sian.
01:02
On June 13 of last year, Sian accompanied his father to the forest to fly a kite.
01:16
They happened to know that Sian's simple joining with his father in the forest
01:22
will lead to the accident that will be the beginning of Sian's calvary.
01:28
He was stabbed by an uncharacteristic type of snake.
01:33
I was stabbed by a snake.
01:36
Because of the accident, Sian was injured in his left leg.
01:43
I was stabbed by a snake.
01:53
His father was close to each other, so he was worried about his son at that time.
01:59
I didn't see what happened.
02:01
The doctor said that it was a snake.
02:03
I ran to the hospital.
02:06
In the morning, we went to the hospital.
02:10
My wife took me to the hospital.
02:16
Sian was injured in his left leg that night of the incident.
02:22
The next day, Sian was having a hard time walking.
02:25
His legs were shaking, his skin was turning yellow, and his lips and face were turning pale.
02:30
His wife was able to take their son to the health center in their barangay.
02:34
They were also allowed to go to Puerto Princesa to get a wider area of the lung.
02:40
It was recommended that Sian be confined to a hospital in Puerto Princesa.
02:46
But because of the lack of money, they were able to take the child home to San Vicente.
02:52
A few days after they got home, the child's life was in danger.
02:58
His parents were alarmed and returned to the hospital in Puerto Princesa.
03:03
Sian was afraid of being stabbed by a snake.
03:08
He saw his teeth turn black.
03:15
According to the doctor who examined Sian, the child's wound was already infected.
03:21
He was operated on and his skin was cleaned and his legs turned black.
03:25
But because of the lack of money, and the parents saw that Sian's condition was getting worse,
03:31
they were allowed to take the child home to San Vicente.
03:35
Sian was also injured for more than a year.
03:40
Because of the danger of Sian's injury, the other parts of his leg were already broken.
03:47
With the help of a concerned citizen, Sian was brought to the hospital.
03:52
Sian was being observed and according to the doctor,
03:55
his problem would not be solved if his leg was not cut.
04:01
The first thing they said was that his leg was cut.
04:03
I didn't want to agree because I was afraid that I might be wrong.
04:13
Many told me that I should cut it because it might be an infection.
04:20
So I decided to cut his leg.
04:25
But what was the reason behind Sian's leg being cut?
04:31
We asked a general physician about this case.
04:38
It could be that his wound was infected before.
04:44
For example, he was bitten and neglected.
04:48
He was not given the right antibiotics and the right management.
04:52
We also observed that his leg was thin.
04:56
That's why the peripheral side of his leg was already broken.
05:00
Doctor, particularly in the case of Sian,
05:03
is it possible that he was bitten and his leg was not cut?
05:08
It's not necessary that his leg was cut.
05:11
Once bitten, you can give the right antibiotics,
05:15
the right antivenom if the snake is poisonous.
05:19
But it's not possible that his leg was cut.
05:21
Dr. Belandres added that if Sian's leg was not cut,
05:26
it could still be broken.
05:29
If we look at the veins and blood vessels,
05:34
it reached here.
05:36
So it means that if the circulation stops here,
05:39
it will be dead.
05:40
So the circulation is not good.
05:43
It will be broken.
05:45
And just last November 20,
05:50
Sian's operation was successfully performed.
05:53
I'm sad as a parent for what happened to him.
05:59
He couldn't walk,
06:02
he couldn't study.
06:05
He really wanted to study, but we couldn't do anything.
06:09
Because that's his situation.
06:11
My dream for him is to have an artificial leg
06:17
so that he can study and go to school.
06:22
I want to have artificial legs.
06:29
So that he can study and play.
06:35
Even though Sian's leg was not cut,
06:38
they are still thankful that the child's life was saved.
06:41
Our team also hired a herpetologist
06:46
or an expert on reptiles and other reptiles
06:48
that happened to the child.
06:50
In this case, there's a high chance that the child was bitten by
06:56
a potential pit viper.
06:58
It's a type of pit viper.
07:00
It's a predatory species of reptiles.
07:03
Normally, the result that you show
07:07
that happened to the child's leg
07:11
is usually the effect of
07:14
a predatory species of pit vipers.
07:16
These are called hemotoxic.
07:18
Although in general,
07:21
if a reptile is bitten by a human,
07:23
the effect depends on the person.
07:26
Even if it's not a predator,
07:28
there are people who react to bites,
07:31
whether it's a snake or an insect,
07:34
they can have an allergic reaction.
07:37
It depends on the person.
07:39
One of the first signs that we can say
07:42
that a pit viper is a snake
07:44
is through its head.
07:45
It's shaped like a heart or a triangle.
07:49
The pit viper's tail is also small
07:51
compared to other snakes.
07:52
And they're usually green.
07:56
Pit vipers are a type of venomous snake.
08:00
They're usually endemic species
08:02
that can only be found here in the Philippines.
08:05
Like in Palawan, there's a species
08:08
that can only be found there.
08:10
It's also different from what you see in Luzon,
08:12
or what you see in the Central Philippines
08:14
or in the Southern Philippines.
08:16
But their only difference is
08:18
that they're all venomous.
08:21
In the case of Sian,
08:22
there's a high possibility that
08:23
the victim was really a pit viper
08:26
because the effect of the bite
08:28
remained on his leg.
08:30
Hemotoxic attacks the blood cells.
08:37
And the effect is very localized.
08:39
Where a victim was bitten,
08:41
it's only in that area
08:44
that the tissues will gradually break.
08:48
This has a bad effect because it can lead to
08:51
what's called necrosis,
08:53
or the flesh will die
08:55
if you don't immediately give it a clean.
08:56
The pit viper's tail is different from the cobra's
09:01
because the cobra is very deadly.
09:02
There's a high chance that
09:04
if a victim was bitten by a cobra species,
09:08
there's a high chance that it will kill them.
09:11
Because it's directly on the nerves,
09:15
the nervous system, that the venom
09:19
of the cobra's leader affects.
09:20
But pit vipers also have that effect.
09:23
It depends on the condition of the body of the victim.
09:29
If the victim's body is strong,
09:32
he can fight it.
09:33
And the flesh or the local area
09:41
where he was bitten cannot be rotten.
09:44
We're here at the UP Institute of Biology
09:48
Museum of Vertebrae and Diversity.
09:50
There are animals here that are preserved,
09:53
including these snakes.
09:57
And there are also samples of vipers
10:00
that were bitten by the pit viper.
10:03
I'm here with Sir Paulo Kim,
10:06
the museum technician here at the UP Institute of Biology.
10:10
We have different types of pit vipers.
10:14
This is where I learned what to do
10:16
and what not to do
10:18
when a pit viper is bitten
10:20
or any other snake species.
10:23
The most advisable when it comes to
10:25
doing the first-keeper snakes,
10:27
snake bites specifically,
10:29
is to use a compression bandage.
10:31
If you're bitten by a snake,
10:33
you use a bandage to apply a certain pressure,
10:37
but not enough to cut the blood flow.
10:39
Around the arm,
10:41
it slows down the blood flow.
10:45
So apply that bandage there.
10:48
Another thing is to prevent
10:50
if the area where you were bitten
10:51
is lower than the heart.
10:53
If it's lower than the heart,
10:54
imagine the blood going up.
10:57
The blood flow will be slower
10:58
compared to the area where you were bitten.
11:00
The blood flow will be faster.
11:02
So keep the area of the bite lower than the heart
11:05
so that the venous system
11:09
and the rest of the body.
11:10
You should also rush to the hospital
11:13
and get the right medicine.
11:15
Those who were bitten by a snake
11:17
should avoid complications
11:19
that could result in the body of the victim
11:21
being cut off.
11:22
The wound should be thinned
11:24
if it's really badly injured.
11:26
A few days later,
11:30
after the pit viper was cut off,
11:32
we managed to get it back to the hospital.
11:35
The pit viper can't be brought back,
11:38
but to save the child's life,
11:41
we have a small gift for it
11:44
with the help of the local government,
11:46
the Panlalawigan ng Palawan.
11:47
We at the Provincial Social Welfare
11:50
and Development Office
11:52
are here to provide cash assistance.
11:55
Aside from this,
11:56
they will be directed to the district
11:59
to measure the prosthesis.
12:02
Whatever expenses or needs
12:05
the provincial government of Palawan
12:08
will provide.
12:10
After leaving the hospital,
12:12
the mother went to an institution in Palawan
12:15
where she will be measured
12:16
for the prosthetic leg.
12:19
It will take three to six months
12:23
before the prosthetic leg
12:25
will be given to Sian.
12:27
That's why the child...
12:28
I will study for my PhD.
12:34
I will study hard for my PhD.
12:39
Despite the severe effects
12:44
of the pit viper,
12:46
it served as a lesson to his family.
12:50
The sudden arrival of his prosthetic leg
12:53
gave them hope,
12:56
especially as Christmas is coming.
