00:00
We have repeated many times the stories of the brigade
00:04
that are writing about the various issues that our country is facing.
00:09
There are the heroes who are sacrificing their lives
00:12
for the service and for the freedom of our country.
00:17
There are also those who are sacrificing their own safety
00:22
just to have a place to rest in their own homes.
00:26
Let's go back to their stories.
00:30
We also covered stories about heroes that are not well-known.
00:36
They are the AYTA Squadron 30, the AYTA members of Pampanga.
00:43
They were assigned to this mountain patrol.
00:47
Basically, their mission is to protect the American's established line of communication in the mountains.
00:55
And they are patrolling.
00:58
On November 14, 1944, Captain Bruce took over
01:03
all the USAFE guerrilla units here in South Talac.
01:09
He gave the name to the squadron 30 from the Negrito Mountain Patrol.
01:17
That was their designation.
01:20
And he also strengthened the condition of the land.
01:25
Because it's volcanic, they utilized the tunnel construction.
01:29
They are interconnected.
01:31
When they built the tunnel here, it has a provision,
01:34
an excavation, and a water source on the other side.
01:38
The story of the AYTA Squadron 30 was awarded the Bronze World Medal
01:43
at the New York TV and Film Festivals last 2020.
01:47
It proved that the rich culture and the courage of the Filipinos will reach the ends of the world.
01:55
Not only the past, but also the future is being fought by the brigade.
02:01
Because it's 2017, we told the story from the point of view of the soldiers
02:09
about their fight against the terrorist group MAUTE in Marawi.
02:15
This is through footage that was taken and from the soldiers themselves.
02:20
Konim Alpha grew up in the town of South Cotabato.
02:25
Meanwhile, Konim Bravo grew up in the province of Basilan.
02:31
They are part of the Combat Camera Team of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
02:41
And this is their first chance to fight in the battlefield using their rifle,
02:47
even their video cameras.
02:50
My family doesn't know that I'm here.
02:53
While they are calling me, I look around if there's no one shooting.
02:59
If there's no one shooting, I hide in a hole that can be hidden
03:06
so that my mother and father can't hear me.
03:09
I don't want them to worry that I'm here.
03:13
This story not only showed the courage of the Filipino soldiers,
03:19
but also showed their intelligence and skill in fighting for our country.
03:26
Another issue of the country that we discussed is the problem of malnutrition in our country.
03:35
In 2018, the brigade found the condition of a 10-year-old girl with antipoloresis.
03:44
We met Jaycee, a child whose body was undernourished and underdeveloped.
03:50
How are you feeling?
03:53
Hold the camera.
03:57
9.1
04:01
How much does she weigh? 9.1?
04:05
That's normal for a 20-month-old.
04:08
One year old and 8 months.
04:13
Every day, she drinks coffee mixed with rice that is too bitter for a child to eat.
04:18
First of all, it's the environment.
04:22
And then, the lack of food.
04:26
Because most of the time, we interviewed her, she only ate twice a day.
04:33
The most normal thing is that she eats three times a day, except for snacks.
04:37
Even though it's hard to live in the community of Jaycee,
04:41
Pastor Mike led an organization to help them.
04:47
Along with other volunteers, they created a feeding program in the dumpsite
04:52
for children who are experiencing hunger and malnutrition.
05:02
Along with those who tasted new hope, Jaycee.
05:06
Hello.
05:08
This is Jaycee. We're going to feed her now.
05:11
Within seven days of the organization's support for Jaycee's condition,
05:16
the child saw a change in her weight.
05:20
10.15
05:25
She's a bit taller, right?
05:29
Not a bit, but she's really tall.
05:31
We're happy with that.
05:33
Six years after we first met Jaycee in the brigade,
05:41
she was brought back by Athena Imperial.
05:45
When we return to the site of the dumpsite,
05:51
the difficulty in the community will still be there.
05:57
Sister Vicky is now 37 years old.
05:59
It's still the same. There's no change.
06:02
We still walk, but it's not like before.
06:06
Before, we just walk.
06:09
Now, we have our own house.
06:12
Jaycee is now 17 years old.
06:17
She's not tall anymore.
06:19
She's still young in her height and weight.
06:24
But she's not skinny like before.
06:27
She's also eating well now.
06:31
She's walking now. I don't need to hold her anymore.
06:34
She's smart enough to walk.
06:36
It's not like before when I had to carry her.
06:38
Sister Vicky tried to enroll Jaycee in special education,
06:45
but because of her condition, she needs to be taken care of.
06:50
It's something that Vicky can't do because of her poor livelihood.
06:54
I haven't tried to teach her yet.
06:56
Even at home, it's hard to teach her.
07:00
Maybe when she gets older, she won't be able to think.
07:06
I can't leave her like this.
07:10
I have a small child.
07:12
After many years,
07:16
Pastor Mike and Glenda are still thankful for the help of the local dump site.
07:21
Sister Vicky and Jaycee are still with them.
07:26
I can see that Jaycee is sad.
07:32
She's very active now.
07:35
Her face is not gloomy or skinny anymore.
07:43
For Pastor Mike, the poor communities like the local dump site
07:48
need a long-term program for the education of their children.
07:54
They should be given skills training.
07:57
They should be trained in different areas of life.
08:00
They should be brought people to teach them,
08:03
to be mentors so that they can have a business.
08:05
Second, they should have capital.
08:09
We should help them to give them capital.
08:13
At the same time, financial literacy.
08:15
Jaycee's lack of nutrition
08:18
will not be absent from the love and care that her mother Vicky will give to her.
08:24
The issue we discussed in Navotas in 2015 is also related to food.
08:35
The brigade here recognized the children who are more willing to throw rice in the market
08:41
just to have something to eat.
08:43
Justin is the youngest of his friends.
08:47
His father also earns a decent amount of money.
08:50
That's why he's doing something to solve his hunger.
08:54
Almost a year has passed.
08:59
We saw Justin again here in the Navotas market.
09:04
I used to pick rice here.
09:07
That's what we're buying now.
09:09
Because I can now pick rice.
09:12
He was a vegetarian for 8 years.
09:16
He's been a vegetarian for 16 years now.
09:18
And he works at the fish port of Cargador.
09:22
That's when I thought that I can earn money here.
09:28
I can eat well here.
09:31
I'll just bring a discarded fish.
09:34
Even if it's hard,
09:36
I can earn enough money to give to my parents.
09:42
I've made a lot of friends here.
09:45
They're the ones who changed me.
09:47
Don't go back to your old life.
09:50
I mean, my old life was a struggle.
09:54
Justin also accompanies his studies and work at the fish port.
10:00
He's now in his second year of high school.
10:02
A lot of people tell me that
10:05
I just have to focus on my studies.
10:09
Because if you achieve your dream,
10:13
you'll be able to pursue it.
10:15
I'm used to doing housework.
10:21
I also want to ride a boat.
10:26
We're showing Justin the episode where we met them first.
10:31
It's like a throwback.
10:34
We were late.
10:37
It's like a game.
10:39
I'll be up early in the morning.
10:42
I'll just ride the boat with Justin.
10:45
It's sad because
10:50
I was surprised to see him as a kid.
10:55
If you don't eat, you'll get hungry.
10:59
But Justin is different now.
11:01
His old struggle is now full of dreams
11:05
that will change the course of their lives.
11:08
I'll focus on my studies.
11:11
I'll work hard.
11:14
I'll earn a lot.
11:17
I can support my family in hard times.
11:20
Where are the other people who are with Justin,
11:24
like Marcelino?
11:25
We're separated.
11:27
We're 10 years old.
11:29
We're separated.
11:31
We're also on our own.
11:33
On a road here in Navotas,
11:39
we met Marcelino's grandmother,
11:41
Lola Feli.
11:43
We learned that Marcelino
11:45
was killed in 2019.
11:48
He was only 16.
11:52
He was on his birthday last night.
11:54
He left.
11:59
He went to Agora.
12:01
We told him not to leave.
12:03
But he still left.
12:05
We heard that he was pregnant.
12:08
He was killed in a market.
12:11
Lola Feli can't tell us
12:14
the reason for her grandson's death.
12:17
All she knows is that
12:20
Marcelino is looking for a job in a market.
12:22
I'm really sad.
12:24
I want to get closer,
12:26
but I don't want to be hugged.
12:29
I'm confused.
12:31
I'm crying in the market.
12:34
I'm blaming everyone.
12:39
Lola Feli is with Marcelino's siblings
12:42
here in Navotas.
12:44
This road is their home.
12:48
Marcelino's mother is still in prison.
12:51
I pray to God
12:53
that whoever will do something for my grandson,
12:56
he will pay for it.
12:58
That same day,
13:05
I accompanied Lola Feli
13:07
and her brother, Merfe,
13:09
to bring Marcelino's grandson.
13:11
Here.
13:13
He's not here.
13:15
He's nearby.
13:17
He's not here.
13:18
We ran out of money.
13:22
I miss my brother.
13:26
He's so kind to us.
13:46
After many years,
13:48
it's sad to think that
13:50
some of us who were found
13:52
are still seeking justice
13:55
and are waiting for
13:57
a longer term of help and service.
14:00
But as long as there are people like Justin
14:03
who are still striving to achieve their dreams,
14:07
they will not lose hope
14:10
in facing poverty.
