00:00 This performance in the Town Hall at Oruru is the culmination of months of hard work.
00:18 The students from seven schools in the Southern Flinders Ranges have been learning to play
00:23 a range of instruments in a trial musical program.
00:32 I feel like it's good that all the schools came together.
00:35 For many of them, it's the first time they've performed in public.
00:38 I was also proud that I was able to perform with my friends.
00:43 The schools couldn't find a permanent music teacher to run regular classes.
00:51 Instead a trial program combining online and face-to-face teaching was set up to give regional
00:57 schools an opportunity to offer instrumental classes.
01:01 Some of them were quite reticent but they've seen it really work well and be quite successful.
01:07 Teachers and parents say they've seen some positive results.
01:11 The greatest change that I've seen over the last six months has been the growth in their
01:17 confidence.
01:18 Numerous studies have found that early exposure to music activates ongoing social, behavioural
01:23 and academic benefits for students.
01:26 We can see what kids can do with the music and we have to look at how we can translate
01:33 that into other subjects.
