Severe storms bring a danger of tornadoes to Louisiana and surrounding areas

Clouds racing eastward across Texas, combined with moisture near the ground, are set to create a dangerous situation for severe weather on the evening of Nov. 20.

00:00 We're already tracking the threat for severe weather.

00:02 Severe weather, and then I know everybody

00:03 wants to know what their travel forecast is looking like.

00:05 We're going to have both of those for you.

00:07 But with a significant round of severe weather

00:09 threatening southern states and parts of the Gulf Coast,

00:12 lives and property will be in danger once again.

00:15 Let's bring in AccuWeather chief meteorologist John Porter

00:18 for more on the situation.

00:19 Hi, John.

00:20 Thanks for joining us.

00:22 We are seeing a volatile setup here

00:25 across parts of the southern United States.

00:27 And I want to take a look at a special version

00:29 of our satellite loop.

00:31 So we're looking at space, the weather setup here.

00:33 And you can see first a spin across portions of Kansas.

00:37 This is a upper level area of low pressure

00:39 that's intensifying.

00:41 At the same time, look at these clouds across Texas.

00:44 They're racing eastbound.

00:45 That tells us there's a lot of wind energy in the atmosphere.

00:48 And that's going to combine with some moisture

00:51 near the ground here to produce dangerous thunderstorms,

00:54 including a tornado risk that will last well into the night.

00:57 And John, how long do you think that this will last?

01:01 Is this going to be a multi-day duration event?

01:03 Or do you just see this being confined to the overnight?

01:06 Well, we're going to have some problems here

01:08 as we head through the rest of the evening and into tonight.

01:12 Then that threat area will move further east tomorrow.

01:14 So we're going to be talking about Louisiana and Mississippi

01:17 as we head through the coming hours and the overnight hours

01:20 tonight and getting into western parts of Alabama.

01:22 Further east from there here, as we

01:24 make our way over the coming day as well.

01:27 So looks like more problems in spots further to the east

01:30 from Georgia to the Carolinas and also the panhandle

01:33 of Florida on Tuesday.

01:34 But backing up first for this evening,

01:37 the greatest risk will be across portions of Louisiana

01:40 and heading into Mississippi.

01:42 And again, I want to stress that this tornado threat

01:45 and threat for damaging winds will also continue

01:48 through the overnight hours.

01:49 So typically, some times of the year,

01:51 that might not be the case.

01:52 This is going to be a dangerous situation through the night.

02:02 that risk of nocturnal tornadoes because we

02:04 can't see them coming.

02:05 This is why they're more--

02:07 it's just the information is important.
