Late-week storm to unload snow over the Rockies

  • last year
Denver is among the areas that may face some winter weather as a storm unfolds late this week.

00:00 All right, all the ingredients coming together for a little bit of snow late this week from
00:05 the Rockies toward the Plains.
00:06 And of course, when you talk about snow, you've got to bring in the cold air.
00:09 And there will be a surge of cold air coming first across, let's say, the Dakotas and the
00:14 upper Midwest on Thursday.
00:16 Watch this cold air kind of move its way south Thursday night, Friday, and then the Saturday
00:21 here.
00:22 Now, not Arctic air, but certainly in the Plains here, this is cold enough for snow.
00:27 CES, cold enough for snow.
00:29 Now, do we have a storm?
00:31 We do.
00:32 Let me show you where that is.
00:33 First of all, you see our upper low here south of Alaska, but it's energy on the southern
00:37 side of this system that will be coming into the Northwest as we move into Wednesday.
00:41 Watch, we'll track that.
00:42 There's that piece of energy.
00:44 Here's our dip in the jet stream as we head into Wednesday across the Northwest.
00:48 Now, this system is going to strengthen.
00:50 How can you tell that?
00:52 Note, the red, yellow, and orange is here showing you the intensity of the energy.
00:57 Watch it start to get a little larger, and there it is.
01:00 You see right in here, and you start getting an upper-level low to form near the Denver
01:04 area just off to the south.
01:06 Now, it's not a strong storm, but I think it's going to be strong enough with the cold
01:10 air in place to start forming some snow here.
01:13 First, we're going to be looking at Friday, Intermountain West, including the Wasatch
01:18 Range toward the Tetons of Wyoming down into the Colorado Rockies.
01:22 Denver, you're going to be in the snow as well as we get into Friday.
01:26 Then Friday night into Saturday night, we'll watch this streak eastward in toward the Midwest,
01:32 and maybe Sunday it could go all the way toward southwest Ontario and parts of southern parts
01:37 of Michigan.
01:38 Now, it's hard to tell how much snow we're going to get here.
01:40 Certainly the highest threat for accumulation is going to be across the High Plains and
01:44 back into the Colorado Rockies, the front range of Colorado and Wyoming, but we could
01:49 be looking at at least a little bit of snow here in cities like Kansas City, Peoria.
01:53 Not sure whether we can get it to Chicago, but there's certainly a threat.
01:57 There might be a little ice with this, a little bit, across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandle.
02:02 And by the way, keep an eye out for the latter half of this month.
02:06 There's going to be another storm that's going to follow this, and it's going to be down
02:10 across Texas.
02:11 Now, not sure of the storm track.
02:13 Now, if it takes more of a southern track, I'm not sure there will be a cold enough air
02:17 for snow with this on the northern side.
02:19 Not sure yet.
02:20 If it takes more of a western track, I think there could be cold enough air coming in on
02:24 the backside of this for accumulating snow.
02:26 So this is something to watch as we get toward the latter half of November, late November
02:32 into early December.
