Water rescues ongoing as rivers rise in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton

AccuWeather correspondent Leslie Hudson reported live from South Daytona on Oct. 11 as flooding from Milton continued, prompting more and more water rescues.

00:00Hurricane Milton's powerful wind and storm surge damaged homes and businesses on both

00:05coasts of Florida.

00:06That's right.

00:07AccuWeather correspondent Leslie Hudson is joining us once again right now.

00:10She's live in Daytona Beach Shores with an update.

00:14Leslie.

00:15Yeah, yeah, Damien.

00:19So the interesting thing is, you know, 24 hours or less after a hurricane, people want

00:24to get back in their homes and assess the damage.

00:26And that is, of course, that when people have been doing today, we've seen numerous

00:31people, hundreds, get back into their homes now that the curfew has been lifted.

00:35The problem is there are still search, not search, but rescues.

00:39And there are wellness checks going on throughout Volusia County.

00:42Four of the fatalities were here in and around South Daytona, where we are.

00:47So the crews are trying to still check on everybody.

00:51There are numerous dozens of calls that are coming into the Volusia County Sheriff's Office

00:56trying to make sure that everybody is accounted for and is safe.

01:00As we talked to one of the residents here in South Daytona who did get out in time yesterday.

01:06His name is Brandon Bells.

01:08And unfortunately, some of the residents here did stay behind.

01:11They did get water into their homes.

01:13And we are getting reports, in fact, one of Brandon's neighbors apparently left their

01:17pets.

01:18We actually were with a high water rescue crew at the time, so they were able to get

01:23in touch with animal services.

01:24And they were doing wellness checks on the animals.

01:27They were not in distress.

01:28But that is a scenario, just one of a multi-pronged effort here to try and get animals out of

01:34homes, people out of homes, special need people into shelters.

01:38It's a tremendous effort from these people.

01:40We talked to Brandon and how he is doing.

01:43And it's an emotional time for these folks.

01:45We got out before it got bad because we knew it flooded from the end.

01:49But we moved in afterwards.

01:50Everything seemed fine.

01:51It was nice set up inside.

01:52But, wow, we did, because this happened so fast.

02:04And there was just, again, so many water rescues here.

02:06At least 75, 12 were today, alone, and they expect to have some more issues on the up

02:12and coming weekend.

02:13Weather has been good for the most part.

02:15We're getting a shower now.

02:16But folks are trying to assess their damage.
