Floyd Patterson vs Pedro Agosto in a ten round non-title fight

After Sonny Liston stopped Floyd Patterson in the opening round for the second time in July 1963 it was hard to see how Patterson could continue boxing at the elite level of the heavyweight division. Patterson was still only 28, but he was a fairly small and almost slender boxer by heavyweight standards. Those two crushing losses to the beast Liston had exposed his limitations. Also, he had been a pro since he was 17, so his body had taken a lot of punishment.
And yet, here he was, nine years later, entering the ring against another opponent he was expected to beat. During those intervening nine years, Patterson had lost to Muhammad Ali, Jerry Quarry (after a draw with the same opponent three months earlier) and Jimmy Ellis. He had won the other 16 bouts, including victories over Eddie Machen, George Chuvalo, Henry Cooper and, in his previous fight, Oscar Bonavena. Another win would secure him one more shot at the big time.
Pedro Agosto was almost the same size and build as Patterson. After turning pro in 1966, he won his first 19 fights, with 17 stoppages. Agosto then lost three of his next five after a step up in the quality of opponents. He was given the proverbial 'puncher's chance' against someone as good as Patterson.
