Ken Norton vs Larry Middleton in a ten round non-title heavyweight bout

Date: July 10, 1976

Venue: Sports Arena, San Diego

Norton stance: orthodox

Middleton stance: orthodox

After Ken Norton suffered back-to-back losses for the only time in his career (a split decision loss in his second fight with Muhammad Ali and a second round blowout against George Foreman), he came back with a win in seven rounds against Boone Kirkman. To put things in perspective, less than a year later Kirkman would be the fifth and final opponent on the same night for George Foreman. After taking a few months off, Norton had an easy stoppage over Rico Brooks. A few days later, he beat Jerry Quarry inside five rounds to win the NABF title.

Norton's next three fights also ended in fifth round stoppages. His opponents were the hard-hitting Jose Luis Garcia , Pedro Lovell and Ron Stander.

Larry Middleton was a tall, slim journeyman. He faced, and lost to, Jerry Quarry, Ron Lyle (twice), Duane Bobick, Oscar Bonavena and Scott LeDoux. His best results were wins over Joe Bugner and Tony Doyle, and a draw with Jimmy Ellis.
