US President Joe Biden will meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping face-to-face for the first time in a year on Wednesday (Nov 15), the White House said, in high-stakes diplomacy aimed at curbing tensions between the world's two superpowers. 00:06 will meet face-to-face in California for a high-stakes discussion aimed at curbing tensions

00:11 between the world's two superpowers.

00:13 The White House confirmed the meeting on Friday, and senior administration officials said the

00:17 two leaders were expected to discuss the Israel-Hamas war and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as well

00:23 as several other topics including North Korea, Taiwan, fentanyl and artificial intelligence.

00:28 "I think this is a very important moment that might be a turning point in U.S.-China relations

00:34 which have continued to deteriorate for many years."

00:36 Vinny Agarwal is a professor of political science at UC Berkeley.

00:40 "I think having the two presidents meet is a very good idea because there's been a lot

00:44 of tension in U.S.-China relations over semiconductors, over technology transfer and the like.

00:51 And so I think the opportunity to have a conversation with President Xi and having President Biden

00:56 will be very useful because I think the Chinese are now beginning to see that it's useful

01:01 to have good relations with other countries including Korea, Australia and the like and

01:05 they're actually making an effort now to reach out to other countries."

01:09 Tensions have flared between the two countries since their last meeting a year ago.

01:13 In February, Biden ordered the shooting down of a suspected Chinese spy balloon that transited

01:17 U.S. skies.

01:19 Biden is also expected to raise Chinese influence operations in foreign elections.

01:23 And the status of U.S. citizens Washington believes are wrongly detained in China.

01:28 The closely watched interaction, which is set for Wednesday on the sidelines of the

01:32 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in the San Francisco Bay Area, could last hours

01:37 and involve teams of officials from Beijing and Washington.
