Do people think Newark is the best place to live?

00:02 Newark is one of the best places to live.

00:07 I've lived here all my life.

00:09 I moved away in 1983, went to work at Skegness, then London.

00:14 Came back home expecting baby

00:16 and wanted to be around my family.

00:18 I'm born and bred in Newark.

00:20 I'm proud to live in Newark,

00:21 and I have a massive family

00:23 who the majority of live in Newark as well.

00:26 It's changed a lot over the years,

00:28 sometimes not for the best,

00:30 but, you know, everywhere's changed.

00:32 So yeah, Newark's the place to be.

00:35 Newark is certainly one of the best places to live.

00:38 I've lived south for all my life,

00:41 but now I've come to retire to Newark,

00:43 I never regret a minute of it.

00:45 It takes me back to the slightly slower, older pace of life,

00:50 and I'm very near my daughter,

00:53 and I wouldn't be anywhere else.

00:57 Newark's an absolutely wonderful place.

00:59 I know that the shops and businesses are closing,

01:04 but we must support the market and the independent shops.

01:08 You get a wonderful service,

01:10 and we've lived in our house for over 30 years,

01:14 and property prices, in relative terms,

01:17 are still very good in this part of the world.

01:21 Well, I think Newark isn't what it used to be,

01:23 because a lot of the shops that I remember have gone,

01:27 market fences have gone,

01:28 you used to have wool shops, cabbage apple shops,

01:30 where now all you see is nail bars,

01:33 pound shops, charity shops.

01:38 So if I want something special, I've got to come to Newark.

01:44 - Well, my personal opinion is,

01:47 based on my history of Newark,

01:49 I was in Newark a long time ago,

01:52 and I've come back.

01:53 The only problem I've got,

01:56 it's very sad to see all these places closing down,

02:00 so it's position as the best in the county

02:04 is obviously tenuous.

02:06 It's got time, you know.

02:08 So yeah, that's about it, really.

02:12 I quite like living here, people are good.

02:14 I'm disappointed at the shops, you know, but there you go.

02:21 I do think it's a good place to live.

02:23 There's lots of independent shops,

02:25 lots of nice places to eat and drink,

02:27 lots of history about the town.

02:29 So it is a nice place,

02:31 it's just a bit sad that some of the shops

02:33 are closing, unfortunately.

02:35 But other than that, I do think Newark's really good.
