Shortly after the start of the "Picada Legal" held at Buenos Aires, between a Honda and a Yamaha motorcycles, one of the riders crashed at a speed of about 200 km/h into a racing car which had just finished its run. Gravely injured, the rider Orlando Aveldaño, 42-year-old was immediately taken by ambulance to Santojanni hospital in Buenos Aires, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The accident occurred at about 15h00 on Saturday, 01 May 2010, along the 1/4 mile straight of the circuit No. 2 at the "Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez" in Buenos Aires. The "Cuarto de Milla" race was organized by the Club Aunar of Buenos Aires. It is believed that the accident was caused by the green flag of the starter which fell before the previous competitors, a Fiat 128 and a Ford Focus could have left the track. Orlando Aveldaño on a Honda CBR 600 who raced against Marcos Gioiosa on a Yamaha, did not notice that the Fiat 128 was still in the middle of his track, and crashed violently into it. Its driver who sustained slight injuries, and the flagman were charged for their part in the accident.

Orlando Aveldaño who managed a car dealership in Parque San Martín, Buenos Aires, was survived by his wife Marcela, and their children Leandro, aged 11 and Camila, 7.

The "Picadas" created in the early decades of the past century, were illegal short length races between two cars or motorcycles, which were not considered as a sporting event but almost a criminal act. A number of fatal accidents marred the Argentine story of these illegal races, which usually were held on temporary straight line street course or in prohibited areas. In the 1980s were introduced in Argentina the "Picadas Legales", organized in tracks specially created for this purpose or in closed circuit such as the "Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez" of Buenos Aires.
