Public Service Minister Katy Gallagher speaks about the CPSU's strikes over an APS-wide pay deal in Senate estimates.

00:00 I think we have a different way of bargaining with our staff than you had under your government.

00:05 There wasn't a centralised bargaining process.

00:07 I don't remember, it's a sort of level of industrial election under our government either.

00:12 No, I have considered and pondered that myself.

00:17 When the wage outcome was on average 1.2% under you, there wasn't this kind of disputation,

00:24 but under a much more generous offer and indeed a much more generous conditions package that

00:32 has costs attached with that, that we are in this position.

00:38 But anyway, it is what it is.

00:40 I'm hoping that we can get to a final resolution as soon as possible because I think people

00:47 are wanting the certainty about their wages and conditions.

00:51 And for those that are at the very low paid or where we are trying to bring them up into

00:59 a more normal range of salaries, the payoff on the table for them is heading towards 20%.

01:09 So I'm very keen to get this finalised so that we can ensure people can get those pay

01:14 rises as soon as possible.

01:16 But we have revised our offer.

01:19 We have significantly improved conditions in response to feedback from unions.

01:26 We haven't had a counter proposal put to us other than the original claim, which was for

01:32 20%.

01:33 And so, you know, it's got a little way to go yet.
