Malala convenes crisis meeting to solve Nairobi leadership standoff

00:00 Last week on Friday, on Thursday, we received resolutions from a faction of members of the

00:14 Council of the Assembly of Nairobi stating that they have made their changes in leadership.

00:22 And as a secretariat, our work is to follow the standing orders of our respective Council

00:31 members and to align our decisions with all the relevant laws.

00:38 So upon receiving the complaints and the resolutions of the meeting that was held on 17th last

00:47 week, the resolutions had been attached with signatures of 35 members of the Council of

00:57 the Assembly, purported to have signed on that resolution.

01:04 And part of the complaints that I received from the leader of minority and the minority

01:10 group was that some of those signatures were forfeited.

01:15 I beseeched upon the leaders of minority and the group to do an official complaint since

01:23 last week.

01:25 Over the weekend I waited for the complaint officially for a letter.

01:30 I did not get the letter.

01:32 Until today morning when I went into the office, I communicated the resolutions of the Assembly

01:39 to the Speaker.

01:41 Within two or three hours I received now the official complaint which is here from the

01:46 minority leadership and affidavits claiming that 10 of the signatures from the previous

01:55 resolutions were forfeited.

01:58 So as a secretariat, ours is a very easy task because our work is to be as neutral as possible.

02:05 We do not belong to any faction.

02:07 We are here to serve the membership of our party in a very neutral way, in a very fair

02:13 way.

02:14 So what we've done, I have done a letter which has already been delivered to the Council

02:19 of the Assembly 13 years ago to call for a meeting of all elected members of the Council

02:27 of the Assembly here at the City Council on Thursday at 10am.

02:36 I have also invited other officials of the party because this matter seems to be bigger

02:42 than just a few of us.

02:44 We have been provided in our constitution for consensus and conflict resolution.

02:53 Ours is to ensure that Nairobi County works.

02:56 We do not want Nairobi County to go down into the drains the way it went down in the previous

03:02 dispensation.

03:04 As a party, we have a governor who is a UDA governor and therefore Nairobi County is a

03:11 UDA governor.

03:13 We are going to ensure we have tranquility and stability in Nairobi County Assembly.

03:20 As a party and under the leadership of the party, we are going to implore upon all the

03:25 members of our party from different factions, we are going to try and put them in a lane

03:32 that they are going to have a consensus in terms of approach when it comes to managing

03:37 and executing the mandate that they were given by the people of Nairobi.

03:41 Therefore, we want to insist that as a secretariat we are going to be impartial, we are going

03:46 to insist on an amicable way of resolving this conflict because we have all the mechanisms

03:52 as a party to ensure that this conflict is resolved and that will not be later than Thursday

03:58 10am.
