A step-by-step guide to installing new brakes on your 4x4.

00:00 Hi, I'm Christian Hazel with Motor Trend.

00:01 We're going to show you how to replace your brakes at home.

00:03 Good working brakes are essential for your 4x4.

00:13 Not only to deal with steep descents and coming down off obstacles,

00:16 but because larger and heavier tires impart more leverage on your brakes.

00:20 So first, we're going to set the parking brake and take the front tire off.

00:23 Always set your e-brake and support it by the frame

00:29 with good quality jack stands.

00:31 OK, now we're going to take off our caliper and safely hang it aside.

00:33 You don't want to hang it from the brake hose.

00:37 That's that's special.

00:39 Then we can take off the old rotor.

00:44 Throw it away.

00:47 Now we can install our new Duralast rotor.

00:49 So next, we have to depress the caliper pistons back into the bores.

00:58 So if you don't have a dedicated caliper tool, you can get the job done

01:02 using one of the old brake pads and a C-clamp.

01:04 Let it go slowly and gradually.

01:07 The boom or bottom, that's all the way in.

01:09 Now when I install the new pads, they'll fit over the rotor.

01:11 So now we can install our Duralast gold brake pads.

01:14 Then we can reinstall our caliper.

01:18 Give it a good squirt.

01:26 Clean them off.

01:28 Now we can reinstall the wheel and tire, torque the lug nuts,

01:31 and go take it for a test drive.

01:32 You can use an impact wrench to install the lug nuts,

01:35 but don't slot them down too tight.

01:37 Always leave them a bit loose and set your final torque with a torque wrench.

01:40 With this Jeep's half inch lug studs and 32 inch tires,

01:44 we torque the lugs to 105 foot pounds in a crisscross pattern.

01:48 You don't want to over tighten these or the studs can strip.

01:51 And so it'll click when the torque on the fastener gets to 105 pounds.

01:56 Just do a double check.

01:58 We're torqued.

01:59 OK, so we've got the new brakes installed.

02:01 We've got the vehicle turned around.

02:02 Now it's time to take it for a test drive and bed the pads into the rotors.

02:06 So what does it mean to bed the pads into the rotors?

02:14 Well, you're actually transferring some of the brake pad material

02:18 onto the outer surface of the rotor.

02:20 So when the pads clamp down on the rotor, every bit of the pad

02:24 is contacting the rotor face.

02:25 We're going to come up to about 35 miles an hour

02:29 and then do just a gradual stop.

02:31 Do this about three times.

02:33 Now we're going to take it up to about 45 miles an hour

02:35 and repeat the process.

02:37 We'll take the Jeep back, park it, let the brakes completely cool.

02:41 Be good to go.
