Starting on a Sea Camp on the shores of the Red Sea and ending on the opposite side of the Arabian Peninsula, where the competitors will discover the coast of the Arabian Gulf after a four-day adventure through the Empty Quarter, including the marathon stage, the 45th edition of the Dakar is the toughest one since the rally came to Saudi Arabia. Packing almost 5,000 kilometres of specials into a prologue and 14 stages, the route is a true test of extreme endurance.

00:00 (upbeat music)
00:02 - The Dakar was amazing on a bike.
00:06 I had some extraordinary years, but no regrets.
00:08 In fact, a lot of relief.
00:10 It was great, but I'd had enough.
00:12 - For those following the Dakar this last decade,
00:18 Xavier de Sautre has been a familiar name.
00:20 Nine Dakar rallies, one stage win in Peru,
00:23 a career high seventh overall in 2019.
00:26 There were highs, but also lows.
00:29 (speaking in foreign language)
00:30 - I was starting to get scared.
00:32 I worried about doing one race too many.
00:35 And in my last Dakar, I couldn't do it anymore.
00:37 I wasn't brave enough to be up at the front.
00:40 - And so to a safer discipline, the T4 SSV class,
00:47 the Frenchman has been given an opportunity
00:50 to drive for the Loeb Racing Team in a Polaris.
00:53 - You can either be a co-driver on the right
00:55 and earn a good living, have an easy and stable life,
00:59 reassuring for everyone,
01:01 or you can go behind the steering wheel
01:03 and you have to find ways to drive, manage everything,
01:06 and continue having a bohemian life.
01:08 It's a new Polaris model.
01:16 It's a new team, Loeb Racing.
01:18 I'm a new driver.
01:20 Martin Bonnet is a new co-driver.
01:22 Everything is new.
01:23 It's apprenticeship.
01:24 We build for the future and keep learning.
01:26 It's really fun navigating.
01:34 I used to love it on a bike.
01:36 At the beginning, I thought I'd want to look
01:38 at the tablets all the time.
01:39 Martin is smart.
01:44 He already did the Dakar on a bike.
01:46 He's a good navigator.
01:47 We really get along.
01:49 He has all my trust.
01:50 And for the moment, he's spot on, so that's great.

01:56 [SPEAKING FRENCH]
01:57 In the dunes, we took off full throttle.
01:59 We caught the Can-Am Red Bull officials,
02:01 overtook and dropped them.
02:03 I was super satisfied.
02:04 And Martin asked me, don't you think we're going too fast?
02:08 I answered, no, I don't think so, because we're
02:11 overtaking a lot of cars.
02:12 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:15 A good 2023 Dakar would be finishing it
02:18 with this new car.
02:19 To learn to drive, the first idea
02:20 is to get to the finish and be on the podium
02:23 and to be happy.
02:24 Don't worry, my Martin.
02:27 I will take good care of you.
