Singer & Actress Kelly Rowland speaks about her relationship with beauty during Essence Beauty Con.
Transcript
00:00 what has been your relationship with beauty?
00:02 Mine was rough to begin with
00:04 'cause I didn't see a lot of me in what was perpetuated.
00:08 What's been your relationship with beauty?
00:10 - That's definitely been a part of my journey
00:12 and my relationship with beauty.
00:14 I know for me, like two women who I thought looked like me
00:19 when I was a kid was Brown,
00:22 which was Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston.
00:26 It was also one of the dancers from Janet Jackson's team.
00:29 Josie, Josie.
00:31 - Okay. - Yes.
00:32 And I remember her dimples.
00:34 I just remember, it's certain women,
00:36 but it's like not seeing enough of myself
00:39 really bothered me.
00:41 You know what I mean?
00:42 And especially when you're looking at magazine covers
00:45 that are like, this is what beauty looks like.
00:46 I'm like, I don't see it.
00:49 Where, we don't fit into that.
00:52 And I'm just, that really kind of upset me as a kid.
00:55 Actually, it really pissed me off to be honest.
00:57 - Yeah, I mean, same here.
00:59 - It was really tough.
01:01 Really tough, I will definitely say,
01:02 'cause I wanted to see myself reflected in the world more.
01:05 - Yeah.
01:06 How did you reconcile that?
01:07 'Cause I know for me, I was just like,
01:09 I'm just gonna be a unicorn outside on Tula on a Tuesday
01:12 and y'all could just like it or not.
01:13 But what did your resolution of that look like?
01:16 Or have you resolved it yet?
01:17 Or are you still in the midst of it?
01:19 - I say I'm still in the midst of it as well.
01:21 I think that we constantly are.
01:22 I think that we're constantly starting new things,
01:26 feeling even more comfortable in our skin.
01:29 And I just, I'm in this space where I'm like,
01:32 what can't I do?
01:34 - See.
01:35 - I can't, if I try it and it works, great.
01:38 If I try it and it doesn't work, eh, great.
01:40 But at least I tried it.
01:42 You know what I mean?
01:42 I feel like if you don't try, you've already failed.
01:44 So I just like to see what happens.
01:47 Like with beauty, with fashion.
01:49 I used to have this thing about even like red lipstick.
01:52 I'm like, what? - Say more, say more.
01:53 - Really?
01:54 I used to think that like red lipstick
01:55 wasn't for a brown girl.
01:57 And next thing I knew, somebody said,
02:00 oh, you have to get one with this black background
02:03 and blue needs to be a part of the red lip.
02:05 And I said, okay, I'm doing blue, I'm doing red,
02:08 I'm doing green.
02:09 Like I just started having fun with beauty
02:12 without letting the world tell me what I needed to do.
02:15 'Cause that was my issue too.
02:16 - I love that.
02:17 - It was so many different magazines saying,
02:19 this is what you should do.
02:20 - Yeah.
02:21 - No, let me try this out by myself
02:23 and see what works for me and what doesn't.
02:25 - Yeah.
02:26 - You can give a suggestion of what you think I should do,
02:28 but I'm gonna say what I should and should not do
02:30 and see if it works.
02:32 - And that's part of how we're reviving Beautycon, right?
02:34 Like the brands can exist,
02:35 but you can do something on top of the beauty
02:37 we already are versus telling us
02:38 you're gonna build our beauty.
