We will start actually with Crawley because I mean the turnaround has been incredible
00:12
really considering how they finished last season, managed to just about stay up and
00:20
now they're finally going to stay up, I think it's 10th but the position doesn't really
00:26
tell the whole story as I said earlier there's only a very small amount of points between
00:32
more than half the league at the minute. What's been the difference so far this season do
00:37
you think, what's been the reason do you think for the turnaround?
00:41
Well it's mainly Scott Lindsay the manager, he obviously came in January after I think
00:46
he was their 6th manager of last season and he did what he had to do at the end of last
00:53
season, survived and now in the summer he's just the recruitment has been fantastic and
01:01
they've brought in 15 players, got rid of a load of players and the football they're
01:08
playing is, I mean I joked on another show I did the other day that they were playing
01:13
like Barcelona, peak Barcelona but in relative terms it's not far off because they are just
01:20
I mean against Newport on Saturday they won 4-1 and they had 71% possession and they had
01:27
644 passes compared to Newport's 262 and it was one all at half time but the second half
01:34
they just dominated and they were passing the ball around for fun, sorry MK Dons, Newport
01:40
County just did not know what to do with them, couldn't handle them and I think it's just
01:44
the recruitment, Scott Lindsay and the way he's got this team playing is just all the
01:49
reasons and they could have easily had more points this season as well but I mean they
01:55
are just a joy to watch at the moment even when they lost 6-0 to Swindon a couple of
01:59
weeks back.
02:00
At first half they could have had 3 or 4 goals, they missed a couple of golden opportunities
02:06
when it was only 1-0 to Swindon and they just fell apart second half but if they put those
02:11
chances away it could be a completely different story so it's an amazing turnaround but yeah
02:17
it's the recruitment and Scott Lindsay that are the main reasons why they've done so well
02:21
this year.
02:22
For everybody who doesn't know, what's Lindsay's background and what has he done specifically
02:30
since he came to the club, obviously he had that first challenge of just keeping him in
02:35
the division and he's done that but what is it he does and what has he brought to the
02:40
club?
02:41
Yeah well he played for Chillingham, him and his dad played for Chillingham as well as
02:48
a player and then he just came up, got his coaching badges, he's been assistant manager
02:52
at Forest Green, he's been assistant manager at Swindon Town and then he became manager
02:58
of Swindon Town after Ben Garner left and yeah, coolly got him in.
03:05
There was a little bit of, well as you always get when a new manager comes in, the fans
03:11
of his former side were all like "oh good luck with the boring football you're going
03:14
to get with him, it's not going to be great in that" and to begin with it was because
03:19
like you said he had a job to do last year, at the end of last season but what he's done,
03:24
he's just installed discipline, he's given the club a togetherness which I mean I've
03:31
been covering Crawley for 20 years now and we've had some, there's been some really good
03:37
times, the Steve Evans times, there was the time they beat Leeds 3-0, we went to Old Trafford
03:42
to watch them in the FA Cup but there's always, there's never been sort of like a family feel
03:47
around the club and that is what he's tried to install I think and he's just come in and
03:55
he spoke the other day really quite well on it actually, he was asked about the discipline
04:00
last year at the club because as soon as he came in he said "we need to be more professional"
04:05
and that's what he's done and last year he said it was 28 days, his first 28 days in
04:11
charge it took for everyone to turn up to training on time and he said he's cut that
04:19
out, he's basically got rid of all the players that seemed to be the problem players from
04:23
last season and then this year he said they've had none of that, they've had the odd one
04:27
turn up late for different reasons but now they hold court sessions and there's a real
04:31
togetherness in the group, he showed me a great video of one of the players turning
04:35
up to training in a shirt and tie with a powerpoint presentation defending why he was late kind
04:42
of thing and it was great, it was great to watch and just the togetherness and last year
04:46
when Kevin Betsy was first installed, the first manager under Wagme United, the American
04:51
owners, I was allowed to go to the training, well not watch the training sessions but I
04:57
was allowed to turn up at the training ground and then I'd speak to whoever I want to and
05:02
you just got, there was just no, yeah there was no real impression of togetherness or
05:06
anything like that, some players were swanning about doing their own stuff and that but now
05:10
I'm not allowed at the training ground for press conferences, we do it a bit more professionally
05:15
now but I just get the impression that it's just everyone gets on and it's just a real
05:21
family atmosphere at the club and it's not just the players playing squad, it's the coaching
05:25
staff, it's the media team, it's the general manager, the secretary, everybody just seems
05:31
like they know what Scott Lindsay wants and that they're going to achieve something under
05:35
him and it's just a real joy to go to the press conferences now and then and everything,
05:40
you just get so much from them. So no, I think Crawley's biggest concern this season is if
05:49
they continue to do well, as we've seen this week, Tranmere have got rid of the manager,
05:54
I think player people will look at what Scott Lindsay's done at Crawley and think, okay
05:58
we could do with a Scott Lindsay and then that will be Crawley's biggest problem this
06:01
year if that happens.
