NEWS: Loke wants Public Transport Trust Fund revived

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook wants the Public Transport Trust Fund revived. He tells The Edge how much funding would be required to improve the country’s public transportation system. Details in this week’s edition of The Edge.

00:00 I have advocated to MOF that we have to bring back the public transport fund.

00:09 If you look at the current, what we are having right now, you take away rural air service,

00:14 it's public transport but it's air services.

00:18 But just on land public transport, it's about 300 million roni.

00:23 So you can do, of course it's not enough.

00:28 We hope that at least we can get more than 500 million a year.

00:33 Just on running the initiative.

00:36 Initiative includes expanding the current stage bus programs,

00:43 because there are many, many other cities which we have to commit to bring stage bus services.

00:51 The stage bus services at the state level must be supported by the federal government.

00:57 Not many states can run their own stage bus services, except for Selangor.

01:01 Selangor is sponsoring the smart Selangor buses,

01:05 because for a simple reason, they have the means to do it.

01:08 And because at the time they started it, when the state and federal are different governments,

01:13 so Selangor took their own initiative, they started the smart Selangor buses.

01:18 So Selangor is one of the good examples where the state is subsidising a transport system.
