Mayor’s ULEZ expanded to all Greater London boroughs

  • last year
The London Mayor’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) has been expanded to cover all 32 boroughs of Greater London. The controversial scheme has made driving more expensive for many Londoners, charging people £12.50 per day for driving vehicles that fail to meet certain emissions standards, frustrating many of those now forced to pay the fee. Critics, including the prime minister, argue the daily charge is unfair and will put unnecessary financial pressure on drivers. But Sadiq Khan and health experts are adamant the scheme is crucial for cleaner air. Report by Brooksl. 00:02 It's not very nice for us,
00:28 that like getting on in age.
00:31 And obviously you can't afford,
00:34 you can't afford it.
00:36 You just, and I've got to get rid of cars and vans.
00:39 - Yes, the environment,
00:41 yes, it will help people if not now, but in the long run.
00:44 But what does that look like
00:46 in terms of impacting people now?
00:47 And I think it's gonna be massive
00:49 with all the bills going up.
00:50 - I mean, I can't afford to, at the moment,
00:54 if I go out every day and I've had it,
00:58 my money's, I only get a pension, that's it.
01:01 - Although this was a difficult decision,
01:10 it's the right one and it's vital to our city.
01:12 Why?
01:13 Because seeing the evidence in relation
01:15 to the consequences of air pollution,
01:17 around 4,000 premature deaths a year.
01:21 - Yeah.
01:22 - I think people and families are struggling
01:30 with the cost of living.
01:32 That's obvious to everyone.
01:33 And at that time, the Labour Party,
01:35 the Labour Mayor, Sadiq Khan and Keir Starmer
01:37 were introducing the ULEZ charge.
01:39 (waves crashing)
01:42 ULEZ, I think, is an important first step
01:57 in getting rid of the most polluting vehicles in London.
02:00 It's very clear that the diesel vehicles,
02:02 the older diesel vehicles were producing more particles
02:05 and especially nitrogen dioxide,
02:07 both of which are toxic and they needed to be removed.
02:11 - Sadly, democracy is meaningless,
02:21 concentration is meaningless.
