Hello and welcome to our latest guide to 5 things to do and this week we're headed into
00:10
September already, almost the end of the school holidays and when we start thinking about
00:14
turning on the Blackpool Illuminations. So with that in mind we'll start right there
00:19
with the precursor to the big switch on, yes it's Ride the Lights. This popular free event
00:24
sees the seafront stretch fully closed to vehicles for one night only between 7 and
00:29
10 at night on Tuesday 29th August to allow cyclists to get a sneak preview of the Blackpool
00:35
Illuminations ahead of the annual switch on on Friday. Ride the Lights is attended by
00:40
thousands of people every year and has become a firm favourite. And while we're at it, it
00:45
would be remiss of me not to mention the big switch on itself. It is the biggest, brightest
00:50
night in Blackpool's calendar and this year's celebration is on Friday, September 1st. It
00:55
promises to deliver an experience Blackpool has never seen before. The best part? It's
01:00
back outdoors and it's free for everyone to attend. Look forward to a spectacular parade,
01:05
free family entertainment on the Tower Festival headland, the exciting switch on moment and
01:10
illuminating Tower light show and fireworks over the seafront. Singer Sophie Ellis-Bexter
01:16
will perform on the Tower Festival headland before pulling the switch to trigger four
01:21
months of illuminations. The whole event will be free to access with no tickets required.
01:26
The build up starts at 7pm and the main celebrations will be somewhere between 8 and 9.30pm.
01:33
We'll stay on the coast now but up a bit to Morecambe where we see the return of their
01:37
ever popular Vintage by the Sea event. Vintage by the Sea is a free family festival celebrating
01:43
the brilliance of timeless design, fashion, art, vehicles, entertainment and culture in
01:48
Morecambe. It's inspired by the wealth of creativity from the 20th century. Vintage
01:53
by the Sea is Hemingway Design's tribute to the cultural movements of the 1920s to
01:58
the 1990s. Around every corner festival goers can expect to find those little unexpected
02:04
touches that truly make it a very special day out. Talking of special days out, we head
02:10
to Rossendale next for the 15th World Gravy Wrestling Championships. Without a doubt this
02:15
is one of the world's craziest culinary competitions, a wild and wacky wrestling competition in
02:20
a pool full of Lancashire gravy. Contestants must wrestle for two minutes. Points are scored
02:26
for fancy dress, comedy effect, entertainment and, oh yes, wrestling ability. You can witness
02:32
this weird and wonderful tradition at the Rosen Bowl Pub on Bank Holiday Monday the
02:37
28th and it starts from 1 o'clock. Lastly, fans of the Beatles can prepare to be wowed
02:44
by the world's favourite Liverpool-born tribute to the Fab Four. The Mersey Beatles have been
02:49
rocking sold-out shows around the globe since 1999 with their truly authentic and widely
02:55
acclaimed celebration of John, Paul, George and Ringo. The band, who clocked up more than
03:00
600 appearances in a 10-year residency at Liverpool's legendary Cavern Club, brilliantly
03:05
exude the inner and outer spirit of the original Fab Four. You can catch them at the Atkinson
03:11
in Southport on Saturday 2nd September at 8pm and tickets will cost you £25. There
03:18
you go, loads going on again. You're never bored in Lancashire. Join me next time for
03:22
another 5 Things To Do, but until then, have yourself a fabulous week.
