Kachra, don't make it dirty.
00:02
It's being used all over the world.
00:04
We saw in Lahore, a company has been given a contract to produce electricity.
00:09
Kachra is produced in Karachi by more than 12,000 tonnes, if I'm not mistaken.
00:14
And there was a time, 2-3 years ago, when politics was revolving around Kachra.
00:20
Everyone was saying that they have to take responsibility.
00:22
I have to take responsibility.
00:23
They were running away from the responsibility.
00:25
Who took the responsibility? No one?
00:27
I remember, the director was appointed, Mustafa Kamal.
00:31
Machines came from China, I don't know where they went.
00:33
The problem is that where do we dump the Kachra that is being produced?
00:37
Because the more we go out of the city, the more fuel we need.
00:40
So this problem, the city's drains are clogged with Kachra.
00:44
So this problem cannot be solved.
00:46
In such a situation, we have such guests who make Kachra a remedy.
00:51
And they also give awareness to others to face Kachra.
00:55
If we try to make Kachra a remedy, even by 30%,
01:02
then it can be much better in terms of cleanliness.
01:05
So, Angel Imdad is his name.
01:08
And he is with his team, recycling Kachra in Karachi to solve this problem.
01:13
Along with that, he is also helping to put the waste in the right places.
01:17
And of course, we will ask him how and what can be done.
01:20
How can Kachra be made a remedy?
01:22
Angel Imdad is with us. Good morning, Angel. How are you?
01:25
Good morning. I am good. How are you?
01:27
I am fine.
01:28
So, tell us a little bit about how you got this idea, what your team does,
01:34
and how big a scale this work is being done.
01:36
Right. So, my name is Angel Imdad.
01:39
And Irvirde is the name of our company. It means Go Green.
01:43
I am an environmentalist by profession.
01:46
So, this whole work was my thesis research in my MPhil.
01:50
So, I thought why not use the hard work I have done for society.
01:55
We should use it for practical purposes.
01:56
Exactly.
01:57
And definitely, as everyone knows, the waste business is very profitable.
02:03
Everyone can see it. It is equally difficult.
02:05
But how can we make it valuable?
02:08
So, this was our whole concept.
02:10
We started with the idea that the biggest problem is awareness.
02:14
Even if we put bins, color-coded bins, people don't know what to throw in them.
02:20
And even if we throw it, even if we write on it, they don't know what will be the benefit of doing this.
02:25
So, we focus on that.
02:26
We empower the schools and institutions so that children know why environmental conservation is important.
02:35
Why are we segregating the garbage, the wet garbage, the dry garbage?
02:40
What will be the benefit of doing this?
02:42
The benefit is that when we separate, our concept, Ayurveda does this,
02:49
that at least you separate dry garbage and wet garbage.
02:54
Why?
02:55
Because dry garbage gets spoiled when it is mixed with dry garbage.
02:59
It gets spoiled because microorganisms start their activities in wet garbage.
03:04
Because of that, they make dry garbage completely wet and do so much that it cannot be recycled.
03:10
Even if it is recycled, a lot of cost is involved,
03:14
because of which we see so many shoppers and different things on the roads.
03:20
Now that we have separated them, what is the biggest benefit?
03:24
Obviously, dry garbage, so what can be done with it?
03:27
Okay, so the benefit is those things that we don't see on the road,
03:31
which all our local pickers pick up, scavengers, we normally call it in our language.
03:39
So, they pick up bottles, tins, paper, and all that, and we have shopping bags left behind.
03:46
Those who have less weight, they have a problem in recycling.
03:51
So, our job here is that we have a very big role in recycling shopping bags.
03:57
All our clients, like Mr. Khan, there is a restaurant on the highway,
04:01
he is a very big client of ours and he has been with us since the start.
04:04
He has plastic bags, shopping bags, so all that comes to us.
04:10
We have a whole washing line, we wash it further and then we send it for recycling.
04:15
For recycling, we have different plastic recyclers and people like this are coming with a lot of initiatives,
04:22
where bricks are being made and some plastic bricks are being made.
04:25
Recently Shell has made a whole road, but it is very important to learn here
04:30
that not everything can be done with every plastic.
04:33
There are different types of plastic.
04:35
So, every plastic has a different value, goes in different money, and can do a different job.
04:40
So, who do you get help from?
04:43
In the local, in the street neighborhoods, in Karachi,
04:47
children are working there and they are collecting garbage from the house.
04:52
They are given a nominal amount and then they collect a lot in it.
04:56
So, you contact them, how do you do these things?
05:00
At the moment, our team is working, our own laborers, our own pickers, pickup drivers, all of them are working.
05:08
But yes, because there is a very large number who normally work on Mafia Beast,
05:15
and different local pickers are working, in which a lot of children come.
05:19
We are working on this so that we can bring them on board,
05:23
we can give them better wages, which are better for them,
05:27
we can provide them with health safety, because in this,
05:30
a very big job is being done, that is, health care waste is being mixed on our normal roads.
05:35
Our work starts from here.
05:37
Now, the pickers sometimes get syringes, sometimes they get something made of glass,
05:41
drip sets are available there.
05:43
So, by doing this pickup, they are impacting, they are also getting diseases,
05:47
which are converted into long-term cancer and HIV.
05:51
Secondly, by picking this hazardous waste, this is also being sold in the future,
05:55
which is recycled and used to make cutleries and toys for children.
05:59
So, we are utilizing that.
06:01
The basic purpose of recycling is to improve our environment,
06:06
to better dispose of waste.
06:08
There is a lot of waste in Karachi.
06:10
So, how much waste are you disposing of and improving the environment?
06:17
So, if I talk about it now, Karachi is very big.
06:20
Of course, we can't do all this alone.
06:23
So, if I talk about the waste of Karachi,
06:26
16,500 tons of waste is generated every day.
06:30
So, within that, of course, there is also a question of capacity.
06:33
And now, we have been working since 2019,
06:36
but still we need some help from the capacity and government.
06:41
Now, we are trying to manage approximately 2,000 to 2,000 tons.
06:48
But apart from that, we are trying to take 5,000 tons per day
06:54
so that we can create a big impact.
06:57
Here, it is very important that we talk about societies.
07:01
We want to work in societies.
07:03
And we are also talking about it.
07:05
So, we can empower the women, the homemakers,
07:08
because they are mainly disposing of waste.
07:10
And their job is to reuse a bottle.
07:14
So, we can empower them and tell them.
07:16
Then we can give training to the maids.
07:19
Why is it necessary to do this?
07:21
And in this way, awareness is also spread in the society.
07:23
And in return, we should pay them something
07:26
so that they can get economic benefits and empowerment.
07:30
Because when it comes to sustainability,
07:32
sustainability is directly proportional to empowerment of economies.
07:36
Absolutely.
07:37
Great.
07:38
Angel Indar, thank you so much.
07:39
And you are doing a great job.
07:41
I hope that their message is that
07:43
we should spread awareness in this way and grow.
07:46
So that we can improve our environment.
07:48
And the waste should be reduced.
