Glaswegians share their thoughts on hosting the 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships

As Glasgow gears up to host the biggest cycling event in history, locals and tourists share their thoughts on what it means for the city.  The 2023 UCI Cycling World Championship will be taking place in Glasgow and throughout Scotland from 3-13 August.

00:00 The roads are quite good here. I've seen roads that were always as big as a bus before.

00:05 I think it's overall pretty positive. It's good that Glasgow's getting a lot more attention,

00:12 what with COP26 first and then this. I think there's a lot more interest in Glasgow being

00:19 developed, which is always good.

00:21 It's brilliant for Glasgow. Really good. We have broke records and I think if people were

00:28 brought in here, the way we've cleaned up the city, it's amazing. We are the best.

00:34 It's not really been noticeable. It's just a few roads are getting shut, but it's only

00:39 for a few days. I don't think it'll cause too much of an issue, but I live just outside

00:44 Glasgow so it could be a difference to what I have inside it.

00:47 Because I stay in Paisley, I get the bus back from work often, or dead, because they're

00:53 shutting down the night bus, which is fun. The roads out in Paisley Road West are not

00:57 brilliant. In the centre of town they're a little bit better, but I don't really know

01:02 if road cycling championships are the kind of conditions they're ideally looking for.

01:08 I don't drive as well, so my opinion on that is only worth so much.

01:13 The next bike I get is going to be a lighted one. I've got a lighted scooter thing, which

01:19 I find fun. It's nearly bored. Awesome.

01:25 It's a shame that we couldn't access the square because we're tourists and we come just to

01:29 watch Glasgow. But I think it's good for Glasgow, for their international appeal that they organise

01:38 a big international event like that. So that's good.

01:41 People should bike more.

01:43 Yeah, bike, get out of your cars and bike. That's the message.

01:48 I'm not going to really much out because I've never heard that, but if I was to live here

01:52 I probably wouldn't be too bothered. There's only a few road closures, so I don't have to

01:57 worry about it really.

01:59 I tend to walk now. I can walk for miles, but no way I could go about now.

02:05 Glasgow drivers are quite frightening, even just as a pedestrian or as a passenger in

02:08 a car. A lot of people do cycle about and all that, and there's a lot of delivery cyclists

02:12 who have probably gone by, even as I've been speaking. I wouldn't cycle in the city, personally,

02:20 unless the roads were closed off.

02:22 If you just sit in a house, it's a waste of your life. No, sit in a morgue and tell it.

02:26 Whatever you do, it's good.

02:29 I work in hospitality and a couple of venues that I've worked for have encouraged LifeCycle

02:33 to work in all that sort of thing, in carpooling. It's alright for commuters and stuff like

02:40 that, but considering you still have people driving around in sports cars for the clout

02:45 in Glasgow city centre, and some of them, you know, it's full pedal to the metal, it's

02:50 still quite alarming.

02:51 Everybody's interested in Glasgow. You must have the best people in the world to actually

02:57 visit. If you're a foreigner, meet a weegie. You're going to get a conversation whether

03:03 you like it or not. One of those things, you know.
