00:02 - Did the Los Angeles Angels make the biggest trade
00:07 in the history of their franchise yesterday?
00:09 You wanna get in, I mean, you can make an argument.
00:12 It's not that Lucas G Alito is necessarily
00:15 the most important player in their franchise's history.
00:18 It's that the G Alito trade is a bit of
00:21 over the top confirmation from the Angels
00:24 that they want to contend this year.
00:27 And I have but no choice to view this as an awful decision.
00:31 Unless the Angels are playing the wildest game of chicken
00:37 you will ever see.
00:39 And they're like, "These teams, they don't believe
00:41 "that we're serious about keeping Otani.
00:43 "Go trade multiple top prospects
00:45 "and bring in Lucas G Alito."
00:47 Because now this team doesn't even have prospects
00:51 in the building and of course the idea is
00:53 they're favored to miss the postseason
00:56 and then that means Otani is favored to walk out the door.
01:00 What the Angels are doing Donnie is,
01:03 listen, you always kind of say at times,
01:06 listen, owners, they get involved,
01:08 they make poor decisions.
01:10 If you're gonna trade someone like Otani,
01:11 your ownership group has to be involved here.
01:15 But boy, does it feel like poor decisions
01:18 are being made at the top right now
01:20 with the Los Angeles Angels.
01:22 - I'm gonna give the Angels a little bit of credit here,
01:24 Kevin, and the reason I'm gonna do that
01:26 is because I think there might've been a change of plan
01:28 over the past couple of days
01:29 because of what's been happening.
01:31 Now here's what we think it was taking place, right?
01:33 We know Otani's gone, we know he's traded,
01:35 the Angels aren't making the playoffs.
01:37 And I think the Angels were resigned to that fact
01:39 and making the appropriate moves.
01:41 'Cause how about over the last month
01:42 in Major League Baseball, if you truly believed
01:44 Otani was going to be an angel and in your future plans,
01:47 Artie Moreno would have a press conference
01:48 like Steve Cohen had with the Mets.
01:50 Instead of saying nothing like Cohen did,
01:51 which shouldn't help the Mets at all,
01:53 and they continue to sink, he could've came out and said,
01:55 "I don't really care what the paycheck is,
01:57 he's going to get that from us.
01:59 We bid on Otani first, he chose us, he's here,
02:02 he's our family, we're not trading him,
02:04 we wanna make a playoff run, but let's get this straight.
02:06 No amount of money for me is going to be outbid
02:09 when Otani wants that contract at the end of the year.
02:11 If he leaves 'cause he wants to, that's fine,
02:13 but it won't be about money."
02:14 You'd say, "Okay, all right,
02:16 so now we have an understanding here."
02:17 That's not what happened, Kevin.
02:18 Silence on both ends here from the Angels
02:21 and also from Otani going,
02:22 "Man, now more than ever, I wanna win.
02:24 Ooh, that's a bad look for the Angels
02:25 if they think they're keeping him here."
02:27 So the Angels and the reports coming back out
02:29 over the past just three to four days, phone lines are open.
02:32 They're making moves right now to see what it's going to take
02:35 to trade Otani and what they can acquire.
02:37 And then all of a sudden overnight that changed.
02:40 I don't think that's what happened.
02:41 I actually think the Angels now are being proactive going,
02:44 "I have the biggest superstar in the baseball world.
02:47 You're offering me pennies on the dollar.
02:49 I'll ride this thing out."
02:51 And to be quite honest with you, Kevin,
02:52 I think that's the right move
02:54 because even though I believe they should trade Otani,
02:56 we were always talking about,
02:58 what's it gonna take to get Otani?
02:59 Three, four, five of your top prospects
03:02 in your organization to make that move happen.
03:05 And if that's not gonna be the case here,
03:07 I don't think you can trade Otani at this point here.
03:09 And also the point that I brought up, Kevin,
03:11 over the past two months,
03:12 do you remember us talking about this one?
03:14 Otani is so good and gonna be so expensive
03:17 that a lot of teams will go like, "It's not even worth it.
03:20 I'm not gutting my franchise for my top prospects.
03:22 Then losing him to free agency in three months here."
03:25 Otani is so good,
03:26 I think it actually hurts his market value
03:29 on what the angels can get back, Kevin.
