00:00 Hello, I am Margie, my pronouns are they/them and I am a LGBTQIA+ and mental health advocate.
00:07 Okay, so I have a question for you. What does the representation of LGBTQIA+ people
00:15 do on their mental health? Well, I think their representation is extremely important because
00:21 it shows that you can exist, that you are possible. And this sometimes sounds simple,
00:26 but I think that this is the case for lots of queer people. We grow up thinking that what we are,
00:31 who we are, it's not possible. And seeing on a screen or around you that actually that is not
00:37 true, that there are other people like you, there are other people that feel what you feel, and
00:41 there are people you can ask for support or guidance, you can use for role models. It just
00:46 shows that you can grow up and be who you are. And that ultimately, I think it's the most important
00:52 thing that someone can give you and has the best impact on your mental health. Go into what not
00:59 growing up with that kind of representation makes. Because when you feel like you are the only one
01:06 feeling like you are queer or different, and you just end up trying to fit into some sort of boxes
01:15 that it's not who you are, and that can actually have the worst impact on your mental health in
01:20 terms of self-confidence, in terms of hope for the future, your relationships with family, friends,
01:27 and other people. It's like you're just crushed into this little box and you cannot express
01:34 yourself. When you see someone that literally gives you a hand and takes you out of that box,
01:40 and then you can finally stand and you can finally breathe, and you know that they're gonna love you
01:45 and accept you and be excited for you because of who you are exactly, then that is truly the best.
01:52 And what I can say is that if you do not have that type of representation around, look for it.
01:58 Because right now, on social media especially, there's loads of people that you can reach out
02:03 to or you can look at if you need to feel like part of a community. But also outside social media,
02:09 I think for me at least, it's been extremely important to find a community in my city where
02:15 I live of people that I can hang out with and that feel like me. And when we go together to
02:22 spaces that maybe sometimes are not built for queer people, but we go together as a group,
02:27 as a community, that it's just the most empowering experience that I've ever had, really.
