Trump Seeks to Delay Federal Trial , Due to 2024 Election.
On July 10, former President Donald Trump's lawyers asked Judge Aileen Cannon to delay setting a trial date, CBS News reports.
Proceeding to trial during the pendency of a Presidential election cycle wherein opposing candidates are effectively
(if not literally) directly adverse to one another in this action will create extraordinary challenges, Trump's lawyers, via motion.
The Court now presides over a prosecution advanced by the administration of a sitting President against his chief political rival, himself a leading candidate for the
Presidency of the United States, Trump's lawyers, via motion.
Trump's lawyers also suggest that there is
no urgent reason to go to trial at this time.
This extraordinary case presents a serious challenge to both the fact and perception of our American democracy, Trump's lawyers, via motion.
Based on the extraordinary
nature of this action, there is most assuredly no reason for any expedited trial, and the ends of justice are
best served by a continuance, Trump's lawyers, via motion.
Their opinion contradicts that of special counsel Jack Smith, who brought federal charges against Trump last month.
When Smith announced the charges, he said,
"My office will seek a speedy trial in this matter." .
The former president was indicted under claims that he "endeavored to obstruct the FBI and grand jury investigations and conceal retention of classified documents," CBS News reports.
