Glasgow headlines 19 June: West End Brel bar cuts staff pay

Staff at Brel, a popular bar in Glasgow’s West End have been told they will no longer receive the ‘real living wage’ as the business downgrades its pay scheme to national minimum wage.

This means employees will be subject to pay cuts, while a spokesperson for the Brel said the move was to ensure the business remains sustainable.

Next, a swarm of bees which forced the closure of a city centre bar has been removed after three days.

Staff at 63rd+1st had to flee from the fire exit after around 20,000 of the insects marked their territory on Bothwell Street.

The bees were safely removed by the Glasgow and District Beekeepers’ Association.

And in other news, councillors are calling for a citywide 20 miler per hour speed limit following a ‘serious spike’ in deaths.

In 2023, there has already been more road fatalities than the number recorded last year.

The authority is now seeking to improve safety and encourage active travel.
