He cited the Gita, saying, "Now I become death, the destroyer of worlds," as he observed a large blaze looming over the sky. The Bhagwad-Gita, a sacred literature treasured by Hindus and offering a philosophy for navigating the journey known as life, is where the quote actually comes from in chapter 11 verse 32. Oppenheimer never declared himself a Hindu or converted to the religion. He was significantly influenced by Vedic philosophy, perhaps more than anything else.
