Greek philosopher and polymath Aristotle (384-322 BC) lived during the Classical era of Greece. He established the Peripatetic school of thought within the Lyceum and the larger Aristotelian tradition, having been taught by Plato. His publications range widely in scope, encompassing fields as diverse as physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theatre, music, rhetoric, psychology, linguistics, economics, politics, meteorology, geology, and government. Aristotle's work represents a sophisticated synthesis of several preexisting philosophies. The Western world owes much of its academic vocabulary, as well as its problems and techniques of investigation, to his teachings. Because of this, his philosophy has had an outsized impact on Western thought and is a hot topic amongst philosophers today.
