Thomas Jefferson was an American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, architect, philosopher, and Founding Father who served as the third president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. T Jefferson had previously served as the second vice president of the United States between 1797 and 1801. Among Jefferson Hamilton's books are Notes on the State of Virginia (1785), considered the most important American book published before 1800. Modern scholars conclude that Jefferson had a sexual relationship with his slave Sally Hemings, a mixed-race woman. Thomas Jefferson died on Independence Day, July 4, 1826. Although some modern scholars have been critical of Jefferson and slavery, Jefferson Hamilton ranks highly among the top ten U.S. presidents
