Mountain Rescue - Episode 1 High Altitude Rescue

The valley of Chamonix is one of the most popular destinations in the world for winter activities and extreme sports, and also one of the deadliest. The Gendarmes of the PGHM and helicopter section of the Gendarmerie are the specialists responsible for rescuing skiers, hikers and climbers who find themselves in trouble. In this episode, they are called in to search for a skier who has fallen into a crevasse more than 30 meters deep, and aren’t sure if he has survived or not. Then they come to the aid of a speed rider who has crashed into a tree face-first at more then 60 kph, breaking every bone in his face and losing consciousness. Finally, they set off in search of a climber who has fallen more than 600 meters down a cliff and face the danger of provoking an avalanche while trying to rescue the victim who has miraculously survived his fall.

Towering above the mountains of the Alps, Mont Blanc is possessed of a spectacular natural beauty. But it also has a darker side, exerting a lethal attraction for thrill seekers, extreme skiers and obsessed climbers from all over the world. They throw themselves against the mountain’s steep slopes, treacherous glaciers and vertiginous cliffs in a bid to beat this most formidable of natural adversaries.

When they fail, the consequences can be deadly. The only thing standing between them and a certain death is the helicopter rescue squad of the PGHM (Peloton de Gendarmerie du Haute Montagne), an elite squad of Alpine Gendarmes trained to secure one of the world’s deadliest peaks.
