महिलाएं अपने पति की लंबी उम्र के लिए हर साल करवा चौथ का व्रत रखती हैं। करवा चौथ का व्रत सूर्योदय के साथ शुरू होकर चंद्रोदय तक जारी रहता है। करवा चौथ में सरगी का भी खास महत्‍व होता है। इसे सूरज उगने से पहले खाया जाता है। सरगी को सास अपनी बहू के लिए बनाती हैं। बहू इसे खाकर व्रत शुरू करती है। इस साल करवा चौथ का यह त्योहार 24 अक्टूबर यानी रविवार के दिन मनाया जाएगा। जहां सास अपनी बहू को सरगी देती है। वहीं बहू अपनी सास को बायना देती है। जिसमें कपड़े, श्रृंगार का समान, सरगी में कपड़े, सुहाग की चीजें, फेनिया, फ्रूट, ड्राई फ्रूट्स, नारियल आदि रखे होते हैं। यदि सास न हो या विधवा हो तो क्या करें? करवाचौथ के व्रत में सास का बहुत महत्व होता है, लेकिन जिन लोगों की सास नहीं हैं या सास विधवा हैं, तो उन्हें क्या करना चाहिए?
