How to improve your written communication?

  • hace 3 años
Try these tips:

1.- Greet your reader with courtesy.

2.- Take care of your spelling and the use of punctuation marks.

3.- Use as few words as possible to communicate what you want. Read your message, polish it, remove the unnecessary. Take care of your reader's time.

4.- Avoid using very long sentences. It is best to cut them down to two or three short, very forceful sentences.

5.- Do not use the passive form but the active one. The active ensures that you are perceived as someone honest by whoever reads to you. It is not the same to write "there are 1,000 titles" (passive) than "we have 1,000 titles" (active). Writing in the active way commits you to the topic that you are communicating to the reader and they perceive it that way.

6.- Review your sentences one by one. We tend to repeat ourselves by writing the same idea in different ways. Eliminate repetitions and leave the phrase more polished and original.

7.- Be creative with the language, do not use common places or hackneyed phrases.

8.- Reread your message, one last time. Delete personal comments and make sure the message is focused on the topic that concerns you and your reader.

9.- Use examples and metaphors that are very visual. "Our product will free you from visits to the oncologist" is not the same as "Don't live with a time bomb in your body."

10.- Kindly say goodbye and wish your reader a good day.
