Regressive and superstitious practices continue to make people blind even in the 21st Century. One such instance emerged in the Mahishamunda village of Baliapada Block in Balasore district. A family was meted out physical torture and forced to leave their home allegedly on the charges of practicing witchcraft. They were forced to take shelter in the culverts after being shunned by the villagers.

Sources said that a person named Lusku Tudu, his wife and sister-in-law were branded as witches after the deaths of the sons of his elder brother under mysterious circumstances. Subsequently, the three were beaten up by the villagers and were forced to leave the village. They were not even allowed to carry their belongings. It is alleged that the Sarpanch too did not raise his voice against such inhumane torture.
