Mamata Banerjee on May 2 won a spectacular victory in Bengal, defeating the BJP in elections in the middle of a raging pandemic. Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress is leading in 213 of Bengal's 294 seats & the BJP appears set to finish below the 100-mark. "Bengal saved India," she said, deriding the BJP for its big loss after a "double century" claim. The BJP has made substantial gains in Bengal, becoming the main opposition party as its tally went from just three seats in 2016 to nearly 80. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. However, she lost in a cliffhanger in Nandigram to the BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, her former protégé. Suvendu Adhikari was declared winner by 1,956 votes. Banerjee said she would go to court. In a tweet on May 2, Adhikari thanked the "great people of Nandigram for their love, trust, blessings, and support.”
