U.S. President-elect Joe Biden has named retired General Lloyd Austin as his pick for Washington's new defense secretary.
Biden said on Wednesday that Austin has demonstrated exemplary leadership, character, and command throughout his lifetime of dedicated service.
The 67-year-old ex-General retired in 2016.
This means Austin requires both houses of Congress to waive a law, as current law requires at least seven years out of the armed forces to lead the Pentagon.
If approved, Austin would become the first African-American U.S. defense chief.
Austin vowed to work with U.S. allies, saying he believes America is strongest when it works with its international partners.
