U.S., EU, other donors step up with funds to help Afghanistan

International donors have promised financial and political support to bring lasting peace in Afghanistan.
This comes at a time when the country grapples with persistent corruption and the Taliban threat.

Kyung-eun, tell us more.
Mok-yeon, donors including the U.S. and the EU pledged to provide billions of dollars to Afghanistan at a UN conference.
The funds will be used to foster peace and stability in the country,... that's locked in a decades-long conflict with the Taliban.
This comes at a time of increasing violence,... despite the two sides beginning peace talks in recent months.
The U.S. says the assistance will be provided in a phased, conditional manner, depending on the outcome of the talks.
"The government of Afghanistan must also do its part to implement essential elements of stability and security, just as the Afghan people expect. I'm talking about things like economic reforms, real anti-corruption efforts..."
Recently, the U.S. announced a further drawdown of its troops in the country,... prompting the need for the peace talks to speed up.
Since 2001, the U.S. coalition-led forces have toppled the Taliban government in Afghanistan.
But the Taliban continues to attack to regain control.
