President Moon Jae-in nominated Kang Chang-il , a former four-term Democratic Party lawmaker, as South Korea's new ambassador to Japan on Monday.
Kang is known as an expert on Japan-related affairs.
He has a Ph.D from the University of Tokyo and has previously led the South Korea-Japan Parliamentarians' Union.
This is the first time that President Moon has appointed a politician as an ambassador to Japan.
The Blue House spokesperson said Monday that he hopes Kang's expertise and extensive network with high-level Japanese officials can help set the stage for a forward-looking relationship with Tokyo.
