And to achieve the carbon neutral goal by 2050, South Korea plans to eliminate its use of coal-fire power by the year 2045.
Currently, coal accounts for about 40 percent of the country's energy use.
This is part of a plan proposed today by the National Council on Climate and Air Quality.
To get rid of coal, the overall price of electricity will be gradually raised over the next ten years in such a way that will discourage its use.
Also, to reduce emissions, the price of diesel fuel will be raised closer to the price of gasoline.
Diesel is currently cheaper but it produces more fine dust.
And from 2040, all new cars sold in South Korea will have to be zero-emission vehicles or plug-in hybrids.
