Supreme court bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao, Hemant Gupta, and Ajay Rastogi on November 3 said they were not happy that a recommendation made by the government in connection with a pardon plea by Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convicts is pending for two years with the Tamil Nadu governor.

The comment by the Supreme Court was about Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit sitting on the recommendation given by the state cabinet on the release of the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. It has been over 29 years since the imprisonment of the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case and all the political parties in the state except BJP have supported the convict’ families' demand for their release.

On September 9, the Tamil Nadu cabinet in its recommendation had sought the governor's approval for remitting the sentence of Perarivalan and six others who are imprisoned in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

The governor, while explaining the reason for the delay in giving his consent, had earlier said that he was waiting for the Multi-Disciplinary Monitoring Agency (MDMA) investigation report to decide on the remission. The court, however, observed that a larger conspiracy behind Rajiv Gandhi's assassination which is being probed should not have any impact on the governor's decision for providing pardon for the convicts. Here advocate Radhakrishnan shares his opinion on the release of all 7 convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case
