통제불능 우려…유럽, 코로나19 재확산에 다시 빗장

Europe is seeing a huge resurgence in COVID-19 cases,... despite having some success slowing the spread earlier this year.
This has led to a number of countries there imposing new stricter measures to try and contain the virus.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
In just the last week alone,... Europe has reported more than 700-thousand new cases of COVID-19.
According to the Wall Street Journal,... 27 EU countries and the U.K. have now surpassed the U.S. in terms of new cases per million,... for the first time since spring.
Among the European countries experiencing the biggest surge,... Italy on Wednesday reported 7-thousand-332 new cases,... breaking its previous record for the most infections added in a single day.
Italy's previous daily record was 6-thousand-554 in March.
Despite that,... Italy reported just 43 deaths on Wednesday.
In France,... the government declared a public health state of emergency on Wednesday,... given the rising figures in the country.
This also means a 9PM to 6AM curfew will be introduced in eight metropolitan areas, including Paris, Lyon and Lille.
The decree will last for four weeks,... shorter than the previous state of emergency declared in March,... which lasted until July.
However,... depending on the situation,... the French government might extend it.
In Portugal,... starting midnight Thursday,... the country returns to a State of Calamity.
Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa made the announcement on Wednesday following a meeting of the Council of Ministers to discuss the rising number of infections and deaths.
The declaration means masks must be worn when out on busy streets and in the workplace,... while groups of more than five are banned from gathering.
