The World Trade Organization arbitrators on Tuesday ruled that the European Union has the right to impose tariffs on some 4 billion U.S. dollars' worth of U.S. goods, in retaliation against U.S. subsidies for Boeing.
With Tuesday's ruling, the EU can now impose tariffs on a wide range of American products and the preliminary list the bloc released includes tobacco, rum and vodka, handbags, and tractors.
But watchers fear the WTO's decision may only deepen the trade spat between the U.S. and the EU.
The two have been locked in a 16-year legal battle over subsidies paid to Boeing and Airbus.
The WTO had ruled last year that the U.S. can impose tariffs on some 7-point-5 billion dollars of European goods, over EU subsidies for Airbus.
After the ruling, Washington slapped duties on European imports such as French cheese and Scotch whisky.
