Direction Words: 向 (xiàng), 朝 (cháo), 往 (wǎng). In this lesson, User john658186522 asked for a more in-depth look at the difference between 向 and 往 and 朝 which can mean towards/facing etc in English.
These "direction" words can be tricky in Chinese, as sometimes they can be interchanged, but not always, so it's best to understand which to use in which context.
Key Dialogue:
向左转、往左转 (xiàng zuǒzhuǎn, wǎng zuǒzhuǎn) - Turn left
向右转、往右转 (xiàng yòu zhuǎn, wǎng yòu zhuǎn) - turn right
向前走、往前走 ( xiàngqián zǒu, wǎng qián zǒu) - walk forward
向后看、往后看 (xiànghòu kàn, wǎnghòu kàn) - look back.
我向Fiona买一本书 (wǒ xiàng Fiona mǎi yī běn shū) - I bought a book from Fiona.
我向Constance借一支笔 (wǒ xiàng Constance jiè yī zhī bǐ) - I borrowed a pen from Constance.
我向李老师学中文 (wǒ xiàng Lǐ lǎoshī xué Zhōngwén) - I am learning Chinese from Teacher Li.
我往前面看 (wǒ wǎng qiánmian kàn) - I am looking forward.
这班飞机往北京飞 (zhè bān fēijī wǎng Běijīng fēi) - This flight heads to Beijing.
往沈阳、往上海 (wǎng Shěnyáng、 wǎng Shànghǎi) - To Shenyang, to Shanghai
我往那颗星星看 (wǒ wǎng nà kē xīngxing kàn) - I am looking towards that star.
我朝（往）地上吐了一口痰 (wǒ cháo（ wǎng） dìshang tù le yīkǒu tán) - I spat towards the ground.
我朝天上看了看 (wǒ cháo tiānshàng kàn le kàn) - I looked towards the sky.
我朝Fiona笑一笑 (wǒ cháo Fiona xiào yi xiào) - I smiled at Fiona.
房子要坐北朝南 (fángzi yào zuò běi cháo nán) - Houses should face south and have its back to the north.
